Firearms in national parks

I can tell you it's plinkers that are a danger. Not sure I want Joe Sixpack shooting at turtles on the Buffalo while me or my friends or family are on it

That is something that I can relate to. When I lived on the lake, there was this crazy old man that lived across the channel from me that loved to shoot at turles with his 22 rifle. What an idiot. I called my best friend over to the house, whom was a State Trooper. We even got the old man on video. They put a stop to that before someone was injured or killed.

No doubt drug trafficking has been a factor.

I worked for the Nature Conservancy in SE Texas for 2 1/2 years not too long ago. Had a 5,000 acre preserve to look after smack dab in the middle of the "Golden Triangle" where there's more racists, methheads, and Bandidos than you can shake a stick at.

I never had anybody come close to challenging me, but it was probably a monthly occurrence that I ran off what had every appearance of a mobile lab. Got so bad the local sheriff finally just had a vehicle on the back roads on standby.

We worked pretty closely with the Big Thicket National Park. Their enforcement officer was a Coushatta Indian that grew up in the area and tough as they come. He pretty much indicated that it was a matter of time before he wound up in a bad situation.

Why add to their worry? It seems to me that registering a weapon with the ranger station before entering a national park is a no brainer. People with CHLs and annual passes could probably even get a pass for their weapons. I just don't like the idea of turning anyplace into the Wild, Wild West.

What is it? Handgun? Rifle?

Personally, I have never owned a handgun. I just don't like them for some reason, just a personal preference. However, I own several rifles and shotguns.

When my buddy and I make runs when we stay several nights on the river, he brings a handgun. He is a State Trooper and has one with him most always. It stays packed up in the gear but, it is there if needed. I've never bothered to apply for a permit to carry one but, I like having the option to be able to if I so choosed.

Gun saftey is a big issue with me. We teach alot of children about gun saftey and responsibility while introducing them to hunting and the outdoors.

Check the Oklahoma chapter's current programs by drilling down starting at nature.org - you might want to look at natureserve,org too. Each chapter has a set of ecosytem or vegtatve types that they focus on - if you can identify some species of plant, fish, etc. on the property that's included in their current programs, it's always a big plus. A real big plus is an endowment to pay for managing the site over time.

I'm sure Ms. Fernandez will latch on to this one with vengeance, HSNP will be the only national park where we won't be able to carry...

They aren't wearing hunter orange, and even through you are on public lands they inform you that you are in "in they's neck of da woods".

With the number of "mobile meth labs" and the sheer number of them on public ground, I've felt more than uncomfortable with "folk" more than once...

My LEO buddies tell me that one of every 10 rural roads in our area will have evidence of meth of some sort... YIKES....

In my CCW class, our instructor ( state police armorer) told us that according to the "Letter of the Law" you can pretty much carry a gun on you, unconcealed, in the state of Arkasnas when on a journey that will lead you 60 miles or more from your home.

Not sure what kind of magic number 60 is.

I carried a Walter P99 on my hip during the whole OHT hike last weekend.

People are NUTS!! ( not me)
