THERMOS
THERMOS
Does anyone have a thermos brand to recommend to take along on cold paddling trips that won't leak no matter what and is small enough to fit in an NRS (xs) size dry bag?
Prolly wont fit into a dry bag, but I saw a half-size (16oz?) stainless steel Stanley at Wal-Mart just the other day. It costs a buck more than the full size one ($21.00). I was wondering why anyone would want one of those - not to mention paying more for it.
Now I know. I think one of those might fit right there in the water bottle place right in front of the seat of a kayak, where we usually keep a nalgene bungied in. Wheee Doggies - hot coffee on a cold run!!!
Wal-Mart here I come...
Got coffee - need rain.

??? If it did leak why would you put it in there? I'm paddling a play boat without a water bottle holder other than the one I magivered in there. I wanted one small enough to fit in a dry bag because its anchored in the boat and if something happens I don't won't it down the river or at the bottom. And I just didn't want a leaky thermos. I can't remember having one that didn't at least leak a little. I just thought there may be a certain brand that someone new was tried and true.

Not trying to be contrary here, but I'm not sure any bottle is always "leakproof". I have had several "leak" on me and investigation on my part showed I had either cross threaded the top(s) or somehow not put the tops on properly. Bottom line, most any of the brand name bottles are gonna be good but there is always the possibility of them "leaking".
I've used several of the small "silver bullet" style bottles in kayaks and all work good for short trips.
Thermos brand has been a long time favorite of mine and I have several of the quart size that have lasted for decades for me.
I have had good luck just putting my kayaking thermos bottles in a small mesh bag and clipping it in somewhere I could easily get to. The mesh bag trick should work even in a play boat - maybe behind the seat.
The small silver bullet bottles are really nice, but every time on a winter trip I pull out the small bottle for a nice warm drink, I wish I had more for myself and to share. Your buddies are gonna be watching you drink like puppy dogs looking for a hand out.
By the way, I read somewhere that hot chocolate is one of the best warm up liquids out there.

I have used Thermos brand bottles for years. The type with a plane screw on top has never leaked. I had one with a flip up spout that leaked when pouring from it though.
I've never brought one in my boat (this will be my first year to paddle in the winter). After reading these posts I think I'll make room even is it has to be behind the seat.

Nissan Stainless
Nissan Stainless (now Thermos i guess), best thermos I've ever owned... comes in small, med, and large sizes. Used for cold days with the thermos often out in the weather.. and I mean COLD... used from Mid Nov -> end of Jan... lost it somewhere on the cache river in 2003, coffee is probably still hot, if someone finds it... .
I don't think they make the unit I had, it was mossy oak, with an armored rubber cage and shoulder strap. They make one like it...
Also SIGG, I would check the usual suspects, REI, EMS, Bean...

Ditto on the Nissan Stainless. High quality stuff.
Mine has a strap that can be clipped to prevent loss, but you could make something even if it didn't.
Get one larger than you need - once you tap it, if there is only a little bit left, it will cool more quickly. But if you "oversized" when you got it, then it will still be mostly full and stay hot longer even after you've had your first cup.
