Cossatot and Big Piney First Timers Trips

Post by boofmaster » Thu May 05, 2016 12:44 pm

We are very happy to announce that the tradition of the Cossatot Maiden Voyage will continue this year, and we will be adding a Big Piney First Timer’s trip as well. If you would like to test your recently learned skills from WW School on the Cossatot or Big Piney, or just feel your boating skills are at the point where you are ready to step it up, with some additional support, read on! The 2016 Cossatot First Timers Trip is planned for Saturday, May 14 if water levels allow. The Cossatot is a class III river with just a touch of Class IV. If you are looking for more of a Class II+ adventure, with a hint of Class III, consider the Big Piney First Timer’s Trip on Sunday May 15.

For the Cossatot First Timer’s Trip Please contact Chris Handley by email, chris.handley@terracon.com, to get your name on the list and get details about meeting times and places. We will need to hear from people that are interested so that we have enough support boaters for the trip and to ensure that you have the skills and equipment necessary for the trip. We will send individual questionnaires to participants to assess skills and equipment and will reserve the right to ask an individual to not participate if in our opinion they are not prepared.

Also everyone will be required to sign an ACA waiver which will be sent in advance to ensure that each person has “time to consider the risk” before signing the waiver. There will be a $5 fee for non-American Canoe Association members to cover the cost of insurance (that's the ACA which is not the same as the Arkansas Canoe Club!). You will need your ACA (American Canoe Association) number on the day of the event to avoid this charge.

We have already had a great response from volunteers who will be our support crew, but if you are a Cossatot veteran and haven't contacted us about helping, please reach out to Heather membership@arkansascanoeclub.com and let her know if we can add you to our list.

As in past years, further details about the trips will be communicated directly only to those who contact us as we need to manage the number of participants according to the number of support crew we have committed for the day. Further info will be shared with those who contact Bob, Chris or Heather via email.

Here's hoping for rain and smooth Trips for 2016!

Looking forward to joining the Big Piney group with my son on Saturday. Email sent to Bob Allen. We've paddled the Piney before 3-4 times but not in a long time. Very excited to get back on it. EDITED: just noticed the Piney trip is Sunday so we can't make it, can't figure out how to delete my post. ;)
