Floatation bag installation question

Post by jerryc » Fri Jun 12, 2015 10:15 pm

Just acquired a Nova Craft Supernova and I want to install flotation bags in it. Been looking at online how to videos and most of them show drilling holes in the hull. I've also found kits with small D-rings that are riveted into the gunwales. So, is one method better? I really don't mind drilling the hull as long as it doesn't affect its strength or lifespan and I have some concerns about the possibility of water entrainment into the foam core of the royalex. I'm fairly new to the open boat thing, I'd appreciate any advice from you seasoned veterans out there.
Thanks,
Jerry

Drill - the gunnels are attached to the boat by drilling. Any ancillary problems by going to the core are nonexistent, not to mention that the top of the hull is open and water does not penetrate it. Many cute devices are available but in my opinion nothing is more of a sure thing than going through the hull.

Drill.

Plan, measure twice, drill once
