Hey folks. I just bought a 30 year old royalex canoe. The royalex itself looks good for it's age - but It was outfitted with WW saddle and foam. I want to replace all that with a regular web seat. I got the foam saddle and most of the foam pads out yesterday, but there's a lot of residual glue and foam pieces, and the inside vinyl on the canoe is pretty dirty and discolored. So I've got two questions - what's best to remove the glue from the interior vinyl? I've heard Naptha is best.....and second question - can I use Krylon Fusion for plastic to re-paint the inside or is there something better?
Thanks much.

Re: Refurb old Canoe question
I refurbished an older ROyalex canoe much as you describe. I used a drywall knife to carefully remove as much foam residue as possible, then scrubbed the inside of the hull with Mean Green cleaner and a 3M scrub pad. Next I used denatured alcohol on a scrub pad to remove as much glue as possible, then put a red 3M wheel in my battery powered drill to scrub off the rest, occasionally rewashing to remove loose junk to see what was left. Eventually the interior was nearly like new. I then installed a new web seat from Ed's Canoes on Wenonah drop plates. Be careful using a power tool... use solvent for lube... as it is possible to build up too much friction heat and melt the inner layer of plastic.

Follow up by applying a lot of light coats of 303 Aerospace Protectant inside and out.

Re: Refurb old Canoe question
Occasionally, when the bottoms of my plastic kayaks have dirt ingrained in all the micro scratches, I have gotten out the pressure washer which seems to do a much better job than I could ever do with a brush. I have mainly used this technique on the bottoms of the boats, and am always mindful of areas with decals. I have never tried this on my canoe but wondered if it might brighten up the inside. This may or may not be a good suggestion but thought I'd throw it out there. My experience thus far is no damage to the solid polyethylene kayaks.

I have used Goof Off to remove old glue, lots of elbow grease too.

Hey Deuce,
Thanks for the nice note! I still have my Starburst, a really great canoe. I saw where you posted the link to a Blue Hole
for sale and took a look at it. If it is as good all over as the picture indicates, it should be a dandy. The seller seemed to be knowledgeable, but it looks to me like an OCA model rather than a Starburst. I'd be interested in other opinions on the model I.D.
Best Regards
Jim
