Clean Up Arkansas Event on Caddo R. (April 12; 19th if rain)

Hi All,

I am posting this announcement on behalf of our friends at Caddo River Camping&Canoe in Glenwood.
David and Gayla Claborn are coordinating a Clean Up Arkansas Event on the Caddo River for Sunday afternoon April 12th
(19th if 12th gets rained -out) about 1:00 pm. They will provide some canoes and/or shuttles for those willing to volunteer their river time that day to picking up as they paddle. For those not interested in paddling, they can walk the shorelines. They plan to have some prizes for most trash, most unusual trash, team efforts, etc.

We had trip reports on Facebook, but I figured I should put something here too, since not everybody is on FB.

Our ACC contingent was small (Maggie, Jon, me), but we made a significant contribution to the overall effort. We arrived about 30 minutes late, which unfortunately put us behind the main group for the entire day, but this worked well. The other group had "many hands" to grab a lot of the usual items, although to their credit they also grabbed several tires, an ice chest, and more. But the fact that they had basically already cleaned the river ahead of us allowed us to focus on getting the things not easily carried in a canoe, and to extract the things that required some preparation. We dug out tires with a shovel, including one really large truck tire; we got a water heater, which required cutting it open with a saws-all to remove several hundred pounds of sand. I think we ended with 6 tires, the water heater, a BBQ grill pan, 1/3 of a metal 55 gallon drum, some big tarps, and a number of smaller items.

And to the amazement of all, we actually arrived at the takeout a few minutes before the 7 PM deadline that the outfitter had set! Bottom line, a good day on a beautiful river.
