We are in need of a dozen paddles and jackets for our upcoming third annual cardboard boat races. I have three paddles there now, and can provide two or three PFD's. If I'm not mistaken Tom said the races are being held Thursday the 26th of February. We have been able to fill this need from a those who live pretty close. Anyone who loans us gear, we will keep it safe till it's return. Post here, drop gear by the pool or call and I'll come by if your close
Many thanks in advance for all the helping support the students aquatics programs

Good afternoon one and all. With all the bad weather we've been experiencing, the cardboard boat races have been rescheduled to Monday March 2nd. I have returned once again in search of paddles and pfd's I have located a half dozen of either, but I still need a few of each. The pfd's aren't really even worn, but we like to keep a few around for the rare few that would like to wear one. My truck is down at the moment, but I could still pick up a jacket or paddles on my scoot. If you would like to help, call w683-7670 message or E me at

Ditto except for the Hillcrest part. I'm in Dogtown but I'm sure we can work something out.
You come too.

Cool guys. I have your number Tim and I will call this evening or in the morning. Likely the later, as I'm a bit covered up right now. Douce, I will pm you my number and will catch up. We have 6 paddles and are working for a dozen total. I'm still looking for a half dozen pfds. can be the cheap backup orange type popular with flatbottom boaters.
I'm not certain of the race time as the date had been changed, but I suspect people will start bringing in their entry's around 9am. and a 10:30-11:00a. start time if anyone wishes to witness the carnage.
The student organizations and I thank you for your help.

Hey Bob - I think I can scrounge together the rest of what you need from friends and bring to pool about 8:30am on Monday and then swing back to pick everything back up later in the day (I want to make sure everything gets returned ASAP). Will also send you an email...

Thanks Heather. I'm up to six paddles and jackets on hand for sure, and another friend bringing in a couple more paddles in the morning. I'll pm you my number so you can have it on hand for later. Thanks!
And to Deuce, I can come get what you can lend when the rain subsides a bit

A big thanks from me and the rest here at UALR for the gear assistance. You all know who you are! Despite the race having to be re scheduled, we still had Nine teams/boats competing. Fun was had by all and nobody was injured.

Hey Bob,
I'm glad to see you all had another good turn-out for the cardboard boat race, and also good support from our friends in the Canoe Club for loaner paddles and PFDs. I have a question though; do the kids actually use the PFDs? Over the course of the last three years, I have seen some brief footage of the event each year on local TV news spots, or one year a picture in the Gazette. In each instance the pictures or videos are only showing a few of the participants however I've yet to see any PFD's in use. Perhaps I'm only seeing the kids who can swim and elect not to wear one. Just curious.
Best Regards
Jim

Big thanks to Bob for rounding up paddles and pfd's to continue our support of the race and to show our thanks for the use of the pool.

Jim, I believe your about right. We cannot make them wear them, but I've only seen a couple in use in three years. Tom Genz asked if we could provide them just in case their was somebody who felt they might need one. Better safe than sorry. I was reminded again today to express our gratitude for the loan of the gear! I remarked that we would always do what we can do for him and the pool events held for the students, as he is so kind to us.
Thanks again all!
You know, Thirty plus years ago, someone was teaching a kayaking class at UALR which culminated in a trip down the Illinois Bayou if the water was up. An ex GF had taken the class, and didn't make the trip because water was low at the time. Does anyone know who might have been teaching that class. If nobody here knows, I'll ask Max, knower of all things whitewater
