Thinking of buyin a wetsuit

Post by Sir_Parks » Tue Nov 25, 2014 7:00 am

I'm 6 foot tall, 190 pounds. I was just wonderin if someone could give some advice on whether I should get a large or xl in a full sleeve suit. Its probably going to be a NRS brand if that makes a difference. Thanks

It appears from the sizing information that you're borderline with the Large. It's been my experience that you'd want to go to the XL. It seems that with paddling clothing I typically need a size larger than what I buy for non-paddling use.

Ideally, try each on and decide.

Owl gives good advice. I'm 6'3" 235#. When I bought the XXL I was 245#. It just barely did fit. The 3XL would have been better. But with 10# less it fits pretty good now. Should fit even better when I get down to 225#.

Unless you expect to gain weight I'd go large. I'm 6' 180-185 depending on how much I eat/drink and whether I've gone to the gym that week, but I have worn my suit at 190+ and it still fit fine. In most cases if something's too big that's not a problem unless it just swallows you, but a wetsuit is supposed to be snug, and FWIW I think the NRS garments that don't run true to size generally run a tad big.

a fullsleeve wetsuit can be pretty restricting on arm movement

Very true. I missed that in your original post. I strongly encourage you to consider a farmer john style.

For what it is worth, I have purchased several wet suits over the years.

Each one for some reason quickly got so tight I gave them away.

My advice is to get more room inside the original wet suit.

Shrinkage problem went away when I finally saved up and got my first dry suit.

Thanks guys I appreciate it. I won't be doin any hardcore kayaking just floatin along and doing some underwater metal detecting, so I don't think the full sleeve would bother me much.

Think more like the kid in "Christmas Story" who can't put his arms down, then. That might help. -M-

While you are researching wetsuits, check out the 'Bare' brand line of wetsuits. I've had two Bare Farmer John's over the years and been very pleased with the fit and quality. Bare also seems to offer more sizes including tall.

Best Regards
Jim
