Some of you might remember the story of my son and I (and two others) being flooded off the lower Pecos River
back on June 20th. Despite having documented the ill-fated trip in three installments on our blog (Lone Star Chronicles), there were several aspects of our trip that didn't make it into those write-ups (I figured the trilogy was long enough). I've finally decided to publish those untold tales in a series we're calling the Pecos River Journal, and I just posted the first entry, a short story about our return to the lower Pecos in search of our kayaks and equipment almost 60 days after the flood. Although we'd always planned on going back to look for our things, one thing after another prevented it until August, shortly after Dan's cameras were found by bass fisherman on Lake Amisted. Armed with fresh GPS coordinates provided by the fishermen and a plan, sort of, to search a particular section of the river, Dan and I once again drove down to Comstock, this time to search for our lost belongings.
This is the story of that search:

Turns out that a fellow ACC Dust Bowl member, Mark Aldridge, and my self have been researching a float down the Pecos for several years now. Including me buying the guide book for the river. After reading this blog, we may well rethink the float. Even if things go well, the fact this run even in good flows and weather just destroys gear turns this run into more of a expedition than a float trip.
I just finished reading this blog's all three sections.
The group did a great job of documenting the trip. Photos are just excellent. I commend them on taking a lot of photos as most of us take cameras on trips but rarely in my experience take a lot of photos when the action gets high up the scale.
Great that every one got out with only loss of gear.
I have been advocating for some time that renting a Sat Phone on multi day float trips was worth the extra cost. Especially if shared by the group.
Without that sat phone, things would have been a lot different for this group, not to mention the help they gave other groups.
Good reading for any of us planning for trips any where.
Thanks for taking the time to document and publish this story.

Thanks, Okie. I'm glad you found the story & photos useful. That's always a goal when documenting our trips. The river can be brutal, but I still think the majesty of the river makes it worth it. And most of the hazards can be mitigated. I recommend you guys do the Pesos. Feel free to contact me if you end up doing the trip, and I can provide you some good information: put in and take out options, shuttlers, provisions, etc.

He has to go to the ONSR with me before he does anything else.
