08/02 - Big Sugar Creek! - Trip Report

Post by tomOzarkVideo » Thu Jul 31, 2014 11:17 pm

Rec-boating time!

This crystal clear, gem of a creek is going to be good to go for the weekend!

It has twists, turns and a few limbs to watch out for. This is the essence of spring fed, class I+ rec-boat PARADISE!!!!

:yahoo: :kayak: :canoe: :drool2: :beer2: :jaws:  :shh:  :yahoo:

We will be meeting at Sugar Island Float camp around 10:30am and paddling DEEEEEP into dusk.

If you have evening plans that involve being off of the creek, bring a buddy to paddle out with… We only answer to the sun.

Some of us will most likely be camping at Sugar Island, after the float.

This will be a leaderless group of common adventurers. No guides or rescue personnel implied.

The Fine Print:

All participants in Arkansas Canoe Club trips do so as common adventurers. The club or its individual members may coordinate paddling trips but no one is considered leader of a trip. All participants take the responsibility for making their own decisions including, but not limited to, whether to participate on any particular water body or section, what equipment they use, the routes they may choose to paddle, whether their skill levels and abilities are appropriate for the activity or whether climate and water conditions are appropriate for their participation. In choosing to participate in any posted trip, I acknowledged that paddling, like many sports, has inherent dangers which can be minimized through education and experience, but cannot be totally eliminated I hereby, for myself, my heirs, executers, and administrators waive any and all rights and claims for damage I may have against the ACC, its officers and representatives for injuries suffered by me in ACC activities.

See yall at Sugar Island on Saturday! The rain has helped lift the creek a little. It should be great weather.

Cory and I will be there. We are also bringing two friends that we are trying to get to join the club. I look forward to meeting everyone and having a great day paddling. We will also be camping so we are ready for some fun in the sun!

How far upstream will we be putting in, or is this a downstream float to the Elk?

We had a fantastic trip!! We shortened the run due to local beta. We paddled from Big Rock (private put-in) to Sugar Island Campground.

We had 6 ACC members (3 are brand new) and persuaded 2 others to join up!!

3.99' is not enough water to keep from dragging (quite often) and is not a great level for eddy hopping. Look for 4.5' and up.
We had some great new folks join us on our trip. Tracy announced the trip at the NW chapter meeting on monday, july 28.

I was surprised at how much more popular this creek has become. There were plenty of people traveling on the river and lots of swimmers. Why not, the water is absolutely therapeutic! Spring-fed, cool but not cold, clear and wonderful!!

Sugar Island CG has become a bit crazy for my liking, but a fantastic time was had by all. :kayak: :canoe: :yahoo:

Good job. Wish I could've made it, but I got a nice shiny (or rather dull) red boat as a consolation prize.

We'll get on the water together one of these days,

I will certainly be on "Big Sugar Watch". I would love to do this again with a few more inches in it.
My Favorite River is the one that I'm paddling.

Nice! Looks like a fine creek to float! Say... that isn't a black-n-Blue Hole canoe is it?

I know the backstory on that one. To me, it is like the stories of low mileage 60's muscle cars found languishing in a barn. And he did make a very major road trip to retrieve it. It is a pleasure to see it on the water again!
