I've heard nothing but rave reviews about this and your post prompted me to read up on it. This is something I really need to do with Little Deuce. Maybe a SWR class would be in order first. It'll take me a couple years to convince Mrs. Deuce to let me take her anyway.
You come too.

Re: Week Of Rivers
I am heading to CO for Ozark Society's Adventure Week on the ARK. Otherwise, I would be at WOR.
Having said that, I have been to The Carolina Canoe Club's Week of Rivers a number of time (in fact joined their Club) and they do a really outstanding job of introducing folks not familiar with the rivers and streams in the Nanty Area.
Really good folks. They have the camp set up for boaters. Every morning there is a meeting where area stream levels are posted. There will be a trip leader for just about every run in the area. From novice to the more difficult runs. You are responsible for your own gear and safety but the trip leader will co ordinate the shuttle and give you advice on the run.
The camp is really nice, the people are very friendly and you are assured of plenty of hospitality. Clean showers, washing machines for that boating gear and close in places for good food if you get tired of doing your own cooking.
You do not have to boat each and every day. Pick and choose your runs or take a day off and hang out at the Nanty or go shopping in town or take one of the many scenic drives in the area.
Get there early for a pick of the shady camp sites. If you don't there will be plenty of room in the open field just no shade. I recommend taking a good tent and rain tarp. I have been at WOR where it was sunshine every day for the event. But, that area of NC is well known for summer cloud bursts that now and then last all day!!!!!!
This is the area I learned to boat in. Really fun clear water streams, trees out the wazoo and plenty of grits, sweet tea and awesome BBQ ribs!

Re: Week Of Rivers
Or in the case of last year, all week long. The Nantahala Cascades were running high with no release, French Broad was somewhere between 50,000-75,000cfs, Big Laurel creek was washing away houses, Ocoee between 5000-8000cfs... Etc.okieboater wrote: I have been at WOR where it was sunshine every day for the event. But, that area of NC is well known for summer cloud bursts that now and then last all day!!!!!!
STILL had a blast!

Re: Week Of Rivers
I really love that part of the world for summer time boating.
tomOzarkVideo comment is spot on. While July short afternoon showers are pretty common, multi day ones do occur now and then. Take a tarp along just in case. Put it up and that is good karma that it will not rain on your parade!
For first timers camping in the area a couple more suggestions. Nights in the area are normally pleasant this time of year, but it can get cool. I like to bring a sheet for hot nights and a light blanket to add on top just in case it gets cooler in the AM hours.
Number two is the area has a lot of moisture in the night air (one reason for the super nice trees and green stuff). If at all possible bring a tent that vents really well. I have camped there in a winter style tent and woke up with condensation off the tent's interior creating a decent rain event. One of my favorite WOR tents is basically a tarp with net sides that let some of the cool breeze reduce the condensation.
A fun thing for me on the Nanty is to keep a few bucks in my PFD. There is a spot on river right close to half way down that has a number of "fast food / drink" spots. Kind of neat to stop and enjoy a cool drink and snack before continuing down stream.
Also, schedule in some extra time to watch the carnage at "The Falls". Just amazing to watch people line up to face that drop. Then head down to the play spot below the store and watch the play boaters.
I can personally vouch for the old saying that if a person sets on the NOC store's front porch, sooner or later they will see long lost boating buds walk / drive by. Never fails for me and a great way to set up future shuttle buds for the next day's float.
