Converting an old paddle to a two-piece

Post by David L » Wed May 28, 2014 10:02 am

Looking for some advice:

I have two old whitewater paddles -- probably 200 or 203 cm, with something like an 85 degree feather. The paddles are in ok shape, but just waaay to much offset for me (and everyone else I know). So, I'm considering trying to convert them to something more like a 2 piece paddle with less offset. I'm thinking about using a hacksaw to cut through one of the paddles and inserting a piece of aluminum pipe (or similar) into the shaft and using a spring-button to convert it into a breakdown paddle. I could probably shave off 3 cm or so in the process to get a better length for me.

So, my question is--has anyone else attempted this? What were the results like? Is there anything I'm overlooking that would be a reason not to do it? Anything I should be aware of?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Here's a website that goes through a very specific process.

I made a much cruder version using a section cut from an old canoe paddle, essentially the same buttons, and putting buttons on both ends instead of gluing one end into the shaft as shown in the link. It worked well for years, but developed some looseness, and eventually split the shaft when it was used hard. I think a longer center spool would have greatly improved the strength, and gluing one side would have cut the looseness in half. You'll see a minor weight increase (which some won't even notice). Bottom line, I think doing this per the link will solve most of the problems seen in my early prototype.
