Rally for the Buffalo! (March 11, 2014)
The AR Tourism Conference convenes in early March and plans are being made to hold a citizen's rally in support of returning the protections previously afforded the Buffalo National River. There was a moratorium in place to ensure that concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) also known as factory farms, would not be sited in the watershed of the Buffalo, but that protection was quietly withdrawn at some point and now there is a factory hog farm operating in the watershed. Geologists and hydrologists have stated that Karst substrate in the area makes the risk of contamination extremely high.
If you want to add your voice to this peaceful demonstration, join us at the John Q. Hammons Convention Center on Pinnacle Parkway in Rogers on Tues. March 11th from 11:30-1pm. This coincides with Gov. Beebe's appearance at the conference. There has never been a better time to stand up for the protection and preservation of our treasured river! We will have signs to share, but feel free to make your own message. You may also bring a paddle to wave.

Paddling Sister,
Do you have a street address for those of us not familiar with Rogers AR? I would be driving over from Tulsa OK and need the address for my TomTom Car GPS.
Appreciate it

Save the Buffalo...Again!
Re: Rally for the Buffalo! (March 11, 2014)
The absolute best story about the issue to date (besides all of mine about how what it will really take to save the Buffalo)

Watershed approach ----- 9 element EPA watershed management plan ------ diverse stakeholder non-profit watershed

Don't continue to whine over spilled milk. You are the public that was not paying attention, and you are the public that has still done nothing but protest, whine, and sue. Woo pig sooie indeed.
Get busy doing or get busy suing. I prefer to do, make friends in the wstershed, and move forward protecting it. I am sure there are people in this thread that know public officials on city councils, quorum courts, and the like. Even when they are your friends, it is still a struggle to make good things happen. Once you've alienated all of them who are farmers and the like who own the entire public domain and 80,000 plus acres of the watershed and make decisions every day......you kind of need them to want to listen to you and be your friend.
Why is nobody doing what it will really take to save the river?????? The governor himself said the farm was 100% legal. Whining, suing, and booing is a waste of time and money. Keep it up if you want to kill the river for real. 50-100 years of time lag to work with the vast majority of watershed decision makers and power brokers will do it.

If I were more cynical, I'd say Cargill bought the USDA and the state of Arkansas to engineer the whole shenanigan - getting the rules changed de facto. Though legal, the shoddiness of the application and its 40 day timeline make me wonder how long between the transition to ADEQ and the application for a CAFO.
