WFA March 15-16 Malvern- Full/Waiting list availible

Post by OzarkTom » Wed Jan 08, 2014 12:23 am

Hi Folks, We are full, but if you are interested, please let me know, as we have a waiting list.

Hi Folks,

We are offering our ever popular Wilderness First Aid for Paddlers, March 15-16 at Porterfield's in Malvern.

This is our standard Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course with additional emphasis on common paddling injuries.

The 2 day course is non-stop action packed with hands on training and scenarios. We focus on the most common back-country injuries and give you the opportunity to actually practice just about everything you learn in the program. If you like lecture and powerpoint this is NOT the class for you....

As you see in trip reports on our message board, it doesn't take long for a day trip to turn into a lot more than you bargained for! We teach proven, easy to remember techniques to deal with just about anything you might encounter, from fractures to anaphylaxis.

The cost of the course is 125.00 which includes your textbook and all materials. The program meets the requirements for ACA instructors and BSA as well.

Free camping will be available on site for course participants.

For more information or to register, call me at 479-595-1655 or email SwiftwaterRescue@gmail.com

Cheers!

I am attending this class and am considering traveling to Malvern a day early to take advantage of the Ouachita. American Whitewater shows the stretch from Remmel Dam to IH 30 to be Class I - II. Any local knowledge would be appreciated. If anyone is interested in floating along, let me know.

Lwe -

That stretch is a dam release section and it's not likely to have a release in March. However, there might be other nearby options that would work.

Since you would be coming from Texas, you might consider a stretch of the Caddo near Glenwood. It is rain dependent but would have a good chance to have some flow that time of year, and offers a nice cl I to low II float.

Everything is very rain dependent so best bet would be to check weather and gauges just ahead of your trip to see what would be an option.

As we get closer to the date, consider adding a post on the trip forum to see if you can wrangle up some locals to join you.

Cheers

but you'll never catch me complaining about too much of that southern rain.

I'd be interested, although I have first aid training (scouts and military), it is definitely good to refresh and learn more. This isn't NOLS accredited is it?

Hi L13!

Quick answer to your question, the program is a WMS (wilderness medical society) compliant program. NOLS/WMI also meets this standard. They are another provider, but they are not an accrediting organization. All of us that are WMS compliant are teaching the same base curriculum, the main difference is that our program is about six additional hours committed to water based injuries, plus we use much smaller instructor to participant ratios.

We currently have one spot left due to a participant's job conflict, if you are interested, email me at SwiftwaterRescue@gmail.com and I'll send you packet.

Best Regards,

Tom
