Eagles & Icicles, 2-1-14

Post by kru1 » Wed Jan 08, 2014 11:44 am

The Northwest Chapter of the Arkansas Canoe Club & the Ozark Mountain Trading Company (OMTC) are co-sponsoring our 4th annual Eagles & Icicles recreational float trip on the White River on Saturday, February 1st. This is a family friendly event on mild Class I water, a great way to meet like minded people, and a good opportunity to try new gear. Last year's turn out was great with approximately 35 participants. Depending on weather and conditions, we may do a four mile float to the Spider Creek Access or an eight mile float to the Houseman Access.

We will meet at OMTC in Garfield, AR (http://goo.gl/maps/iTzDF" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) at 9:30am to load boats on a trailer and will depart for the Beaver Lake Damn at 10:00am. OMTC will open at 9:00 and they will provide free coffee and doughnuts. We have seen icicles every time and we have seen eagles on two of the three floats. Feel free to contact me or BJ at OMTC if you have any questions or simply post them on this thread.

Come on out and join us, we look forward to seeing you there!

Kristian,
Sounds like fun. Is there registration for the 2/1/14 float or just show up? I float with a group near Mountain Home/ Harrison. I am hopeful that several of my fellow kayakers will join me. Looking forward to seeing you on the 1st. Peggy

Peggy,

All you need to do is show up at OMTC and bring your gear and lunch. Look forward to meeting you.

Just made a change to the original thread as I learned that OMTC opens at 9:00am and not 8:30 like I originally posted.

BJ mentioned last night that he had a lot of interest from their facebook page/post. Should be a good group. Would like to see the ACC represent as well.

Weather should be a balmy ~40 degree.

Come and join us,

The way that it stands right now we have a 50% chance of rain on Saturday morning. This is/will be a rain or shine event. I've talked with BJ and will monitor the weather on Saturday morning at OMTC. We may delay the trip a little to wait for a storm to pass if need be.

Good news is that the temps should be in the mid 40s. I will take a little rain over the unbearable cold weather we have had this winter.

Nice and warm (relatively). Got a chance of showers and I am guessing that it will get cooler as the day goes on. Looking forward to a fun float.

There was a great turn out even though the weather was not ideal. Started out in the 50s but quickly dropped to the 30s and seemed to rain the entire time. One of those floats that make me appreciate a hot shower and warm fire. I counted 23 boats with several tandems, so there were around 25 of us. We opted to do the short 4 mile float because of the weather, though there were a few brave soles that took on the 8 mile float.

Happy I think you were the only one with an eagle sighting.

Until next year,
kru

Thanks for the trip report! I'm glad so many decided to brave the weather conditions and enjoy the day on the water anyway, and probably enjoyed those hot showers and warm homes all the more when they got home.

I'm happy to report that your Eagles & Icicles Tour will be the first February trip to qualify for the February Trip Coordinator Drawing!
