Tour #2 Wattensaw Bayou Saturday December 14

Post by DeBo » Mon Dec 09, 2013 2:26 pm

Meet at T Ricks in Hazen off I40 exit 193 at 9:00am. Weather forecast calling for partly sunny and upper 40s. Planning a short trip from the first boat ramp to the middle access. This is about 4 miles. Lunch on the river, supper somewhere after. Hope to see you there!

I plan on being there. Don't let it get any colder.

Bob, if you run across that rope I mentioned the other night and happen to think of it would you throw it in a vehicle that will head back to Pulaski county? Thanks! Wish I could join you guys on this one.
You come too.

Is there a place to launch and take out that are fairly sandy & concrete & gravel free. I've got to keep my promise & paddle a certain canoe as often as possible. :jaws:

Wes, there are concrete boat ramps at both ends of this one. You can probably chose a muddy spot a few feet upstream or downstream of the ramp, but, if you have a 3 or 4' square of scrap carpet, we could throw that down on the ramp and keep a nice cedar strip boat looking beautiful. If you don't, send me a text and I'll find something to throw in Debo's car before I forget.

Roger that Cowper. There just happens to be a custom carpet & rug maker in my building downtown.

Whoa. Wes, you're gonna paddle a cedar boat in a cypress swamp? Isn't that kind of like crossing the streams? :wht:
You come too.

Work may still get in the way, but I hope to join as well.

Well you wouldn't think that a gloomy day in the swamp at 40 degrees would draw a very big crowd but, as it turns out, we ended up with seven boats on an upper section of Wattensaw Bayou today. I took the advantage of higher water levels to put the group on a section that is rarely paddled. The current was moving through the trees at a pretty fast clip and it was a little more that a few of our group expected but everyone made it down high and dry with only a couple of close calls. After successfully pulling one stuck shuttle vehicle out of the mud, we had early dinner at Nick's Barbecue in Carlisle and made it home before dark. All in all, a great day on the river. :canoe:

Thanks Debbie. My first time on Wattensaw. A little tougher steering today but lots of fun. Only one portage and I can't even count that since Woody pulled my boat over, with me in it. Sure glad I threw an extra jacket in my car. Cold. Good to meet some new people.

Debbie. Thank you for organizing this trip and showing me a beautiful stream that I had never seen before. I post a link below to a slide show with some pictures I took on the trip. John.
