Re: Buffalo River Closure???
This thread is interesting but what happened today at Dover Del makes it seem kind of small.....
Well, something happened just this afternoon that makes Obama, Boehner and Reid look like x=+)*&^^^%^%.
Do not know if the major media will cover this but evidently 5 military KIA arrived in Dover Del this afternoon. I know Fox News is not considered legit by a lot of people but seems to me there is no way they would report this unless it was solid.
Families are normally flown up to receive the bodies at Dover and then the military takes care of the funerals.
Families were told due to the slow down, no money available to get them to Dover or to process the bodies for funerals.
Evidently, according to Oliver North, complaints were made up to Sec of Defense Chuck Hagel and no help.
I don't care what your political stance is or who you support, it is inconceivable to me that a Commander in Chief would not pick up the phone and take care of the troopers that gave their lives carrying out his orders.
Just makes me want to throw up.
What have we become as a nation when we let politics get in the way of taking care of our KIA military heroes?

Re: Buffalo River Closure???
I have seen it on several news sites, but not MSM. Private vet support foundations are hustling to take up the slack for these families. Normally the interim payment for expenses is wired within three days to cover the families travel to receive their sons/husband's bodies and take them home, cover funeral costs and help pay for rent/house payments and food until survivor's benefits begin. But as I said, private groups are working to do the job SECDEF and POTUS refuse to do. God bless these men and their families. And those moving as fast as they can to help them.

I channel surf between CNN, MSNBC and Fox during the evening news prime time.
MSNBC had the story as well, so it has to be the real deal.

Re: Buffalo River Closure???
Exactly who is responsible for this outrage is clearly evident in the records. In spite of claims otherwise, the decision was made by the Executive administration. It was anticipated by the Congress when the bill was passed to fully fund the military and specificly pointed out to SECDEF in letters from those who drafted the legislation.

Y'all are pretty funny, getting all upset about stories filled with half-truths.
Here's an article that answers questions about the shutdown as it relates to the NPS.

I would much rather the parks be closed than to have them vandalized or to have people get injured/lost and not have enough manpower to throw at a search and rescue.

Number of recorded deaths and injuries at the veterans' memorials please? Most are/were open 24/7/365 with no staff whatsoever. Also, MOST SAR efforts are done by non-Federal agencies.

There are no half-truths here.

Re: Buffalo River Closure???
Actually, the Advocate website posted above contained some examples of half-truths.Yarbrough wrote:There are no half-truths here.
The truth is that Congress wrote a continuing resolution bill fully funding NPS and sent it to the Senate where it has sat without any action from Reid and with the President declaring, it not even haveing been submitted for his approval, that he would veto it.1. Question: Was closing the national parks really necessary?
Answer: The entire National Park System is closed because Congress has stopped appropriating funding to keep it open.
In their zeal to make it hurt, they attempted to close Mount Vernon which they don't own, fund or control. The ladies who do own and run it finally showed the Feds documents which proved they were the tresspassers, not the tourists and barracades were removed.
And Mount Rushmore. They placed cones along the highway to keep people from pulling into the roadside scenic viewing lots to take pictures from a distance. Half-truth? The State told them to take the cones down and they did remove a few using the excuse, "Well, we just put them there to funnel traffic into the viewing areas".
And the D Day Memorial at Omaha Beach in Normandy? Gimme a break. The "Wall", Vietnam Vet's Memorial in DC was built with donations from citizens and civic groups as best I can recall. And I am not aware of it being staffed 24/7 by armed NPS guards and barracades. Deaths and injuries there? Rescue efforts? Vandelism?
Re: Buffalo River Closure???
I think you mean the House wrote bills to fund the government willy-nilly and sent those bills to the Senate.
I applaud the Senate and the President for not putting up with the childish games that the House Speaker is playing.
If they fund programs you like then I guarantee someone else won't like them. That's not a good way to run the government.
And like I said, it's easy to second guess the people in charge of protecting out national treasures. I say closed means closed, stay the hell out. You know this House led fiasco will end in a timeframe of a few days to a few weeks. So let it run its course and in the meantime direct your frustration at the people who are attempting to circumvent the process by which our laws are written, passed, signed, and vetted by the courts.

Re: Buffalo River Closure???
This is just plain silly:
The NPS Q&A page that is linked to is full of holes and B.S. Most of it is completely groundless.
First of all, I suspect that most of the vandalism that is occurring now is to the barricades and gates which should not even be there (i.e. throwing little orange cones into the ditch). And it has already been pointed out that SAR is usually conducted by other agencies such as the sheriff's department and fine organizations such as the ACC. Also, most people who hike/backpack into the "wilderness" are self-reliant and know what they are doing. And most paddlers are trained to take care of themselves and carry the proper saftey equipment. And, btw, people were floating & hiking the Buffalo River for a hundred years before the NPS ever got involved.I would much rather the parks be closed than to have them vandalized or to have people get injured/lost and not have enough manpower to throw at a search and rescue.
