need some suggestions

Post by Hawkayaks » Wed Sep 11, 2013 9:46 pm

Coming back up that way soon and looking to do an overnight backpacking hike on the OHT. Wont have a shuttle so looking to do a 10-15 mile out and back hence a total of 20-30 miles over two days. Looking for remoteness and spectacular scenery. Any suggestions?

the White Rock Mountain>Shores lake loop might work. its not as long as you're asking for but at least you wouldnt have to retrace the same ground. The West side is much prettier than the east side so you could camp there and explore White Rock Creek to fill in more hiking.

thats a pretty section assuming its the same as i'm thinking. the "parking lot" is hard to find though and we had to drive across a tributary that can offer a challenge

I know you specifically said OHT, but the Buffalo River Trail, the Old River Trail, and other trails in the Ponca to Pruitt corridor offer far more possibilities for loop hikes than anything on the OHT and the scenery around the Buffalo National River is some of the finest in Arkansas.

The National Geographic map of the west half of the Buffalo (link below) shows the river, trails, mileages, and points of interest and is one of the best trip planning tools I've found for that area.
