Attn: Rec School alumni - Lil Mo Friday, Aug. 16

Post by Liz Caldwell » Tue Aug 06, 2013 4:20 pm

I'm planning to paddle the Little Missouri below the Narrows Dam (at Murfreesboro) on Friday, Aug. 16. This easy Class II dam release run would be excellent for Rec School graduates to come out and practice their skills.

This is not an instructor-led trip. But I expect several experienced paddlers to be along for the fun. It's a good chance to get back together with fellow Rec School participants and put to use what you learned on the Spring River.

I'll post more information next week on how the shuttle works and time we'll meet. I''ll have to verify the time the river will run. This week the release starts at 1 p.m. We need to have shuttle set, boats unloaded and paddlers geared up to launch right when the release starts for optimal fun as we follow the surge down river.

Again, this is not a formal event, but I wanted to give people time to get off work if they need to and make travel plans.

Hope to see an many as can make it!

The trip is still on for Friday. The generators are turned on at NOON. We are planning to be geared up and ready to paddle by 12:15. You want to be at the front of the release for the most fun and surfing.

If you've been before and want to get together with friends and set your own shuttle before the paddle, that's fine. However, we don't know how many are expected to join us and just know that space can be an issue at the bridge takeout.

If you are new to this run, I suggest you go straight to the put in at the Narrows Dam. Chicago Bob is going to drop his van at the take out and can shuttle several drivers to the top at the end of the day to get your vehicles.

Try to be at the put-in by 11:45. Be there by 11:30 if you want to run your vehicle to the bottom and get back in time to launch. There is no formal shuttle. Either make arrangements with friends beforehand, or catch a ride back to the top at the end of the day with Bob or others.

DIRECTIONS:

Take out: 34.085809,-93.707138
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=34.085809" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... 1&t=m&z=14

(it's not really a low water bridge...we meet on the near side of the river closest to Murfreesboro, so assuming you are coming from Murfreesboro and you cross the bridge over the Lil Mo - you've gone to far. Look to pull off on the right before you cross the river)

My Google maps doesn't like those coordinates, even when I click on the link. :(

If I go, I'll most likely decide tomorrow morning and get myself there.

I'm meeting one other paddler at Whole Foods in Little Rock at 9:40. If you don't mind riding in the back seat, I can take 1-2 more people and kayaks, or 1 more person and smaller canoe.

How was Friday's paddle on the Little Missouri?

Louis, Fridays paddle was great. Noon was the earliest release that I've seen and kept some from going. But as it stood 17 kayaks and myself in a canoe braved the low 80 degree temperatures to enjoy a three generator release. I confess that I was the lone swimmer. BOB

The release is at 11:00 this week. That time might allow me to swing a trip this week.

Thanks for the report, Chicago Bob. 18 boats is a GOOD number, even if 17 were kayaks. :box: Good job with the canoe, I'm too old to call them "open boats." A group is paddling Oct 12 - 17 on the Current and Jacks Fork, maybe you can join us.

I wasn't going to tell, Bob. Glad several rec school folks made it. Weather was a little cloudy, but warm. Only one mishap at the takeout! Some went for Mexican in Murfreesboro, but it was so early in the afternoon that some headed to Hot Springs for Mexican.

Thanks to all who made it! Hope to be able to do it again before summer's end.
