I would like to invite the ACC this meeting. There will be a specific agenda which will be followed closely. Our time in the library is limited. We hope to adjourn to Tanglewood Bar afterwards where your individual opinions may be discussed ad infinitum. Come out, support Deb Doss, meet others who cherish the Buffalo as much as you do. Thanks!
THE BUFFALO NATIONAL RIVER NEEDS YOUR HELP ..NOW!
TOWN HALL MEETING SCHEDULED TO RALLY SUPPORT FOR OUR FIRST NATIONAL RIVER.
MAY 1ST, 2013 6:00-7:30 PM
FAYETTEVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY
A public meeting to inform and energize the opposition to the confined animal feeding operation (CAFO) being developed within the watershed of the Buffalo River will be held May 1st at the Fayetteville Public Library Walker Community room from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
Buffalo River Rescue: Mission Possible, a small group of concerned citizens, organized the forum which will include short speeches from Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan and from a representative of the Ozark Society. Spokespersons from the Audubon Society, the Sierra Club, the Arkansas Canoe Club, as well as representatives from the economic and scientific communities will attend to answer questions from the public.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 1st at the Fayetteville Public Library Walker Community room from 6:00 to 7:30.
The CAFO will be located in Newton County, above Big Creek, a tributary of the Buffalo. The CAFO will house up to 6,500 pigs and the urine and feces from the pigs will be sprayed over about 600 acres, all of it within the Big Creek and Buffalo National River watershed. Many people, including Kevin Cheri, the Buffalo National River superintendent, believe that the hog factory (CAFO) has the potential to do considerable harm to the river and its ecosystem. The tourist industry, restaurants, lodges, canoe rentals, etc., which have grown along with the National River stand to suffer as well.
Resistance to the permitting of this CAFO by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has been strong and far-reaching. The National Park Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agency have both taken issue with the permitting process. The National Parks Conservation Association has publicly called the permitting process flawed and recommends the U.S. Department of Agriculture and ADEQ work cooperatively to pull the permit itself.
This river, the pride of the Natural State, flows free as a result of a ten year battle led by the Ozark Society to prevent it from being dammed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It became the first National River of the U.S. in 1972. Since that time, she has given an entire generation an opportunity to enjoy and learn of the wonders of nature: unspoiled, undeveloped and unpolluted.
The Buffalo River Rescue: Mission Possible encourages the public to educate and inform themselves, speak in solidarity, and defend this rare and precious resource which belongs to all of us. The Battle for the Buffalo, Part II, begins. Your help will make a difference.
