Hello all, my family has decided that they want to float the Caddo tomorrow. I haven't ever floated it, and have a few questions regarding the put in and take out. What's the usual recommended stretch that gets floated? I've been to Glenwood a few times, but never on the Caddo. Also, are there any interested parties who would be willing to join up and help with the shuttle? Give me a ring at 5ought1 threeoh8 fifty-four nine 5.

I'm so glad you asked! The Upper Caddo at Glenwood is through for season, too low.The Lower Caddo though will be a fun outing for your family, but I'm sorry to say, not very long in length. It however will be fun because, like the Remmel Dam float, the minimum flow released from the Lake DeGray dam keeps the water at a pretty pleasant temperature to swim in. The float is short, two miles, so I suggest stretching it out by packing a picnic lunch, fishing, goofing-off, etc, and taking your time. At present, there is only one access at the take out, at Hwy 67, "River Rats", I don't know how much they charge for parking there but am sure they are fairly reasonable, and would be happy to also assist with a shuttle if needed, if you visit with them beforehand. To get to the put-in, you will need to get off interstate 30 at the 'Caddo Valley' exit, turn North, and immediately turn left on Lower Dam Pike Road, it will terminate at the Lower Dam Use Area, and the ramp. The take-out, as mentioned, is at Caddo Valley proper beside the Hwy 67 bridge.
If you feel more adventurous, you could float "9" miles from the Lower Dam ramp to the Hwy 7 access at Arkadelphia at no charge, but that can be a pretty long trip during low water-hot weather conditions. I have had friends who took a rather "dim view' of me for taking them on this trip, but it is all 'free' public access, scenic, and does help build character.
In the afternoons right now, the Corps. is releasing some water, so I would recommend you plan for a put-in time in the mid-morning to enjoy the river more. With it being a weekday, I think you'll pretty much have it to yourselves. You can paddle this two-mile section in about 40min., or 3 hrs., which is my preference. I hope this helps.
You could also take them on the Lower Ouachita River from Remmel to Rockport, it should be running by noon at the dam , and at five miles in length down to the WW Park, much longer than the Lower Caddo.
