Ot; road trip to WA. Don't miss in the northern rockies?

Post by Clif » Thu Jun 13, 2013 8:34 am

Must be in Spokane on July 7th. 4th week air fares are crazy. Let's drive mom says. Little to no boating with all family.

Plan on finding Mt Rushmore on the way out. Suggested route is up till SD and across. Is there anything we should see in Nebraska?

Return trip will be by Yellowstone/Teton area, I know bad time of year.. but it is what it is. What else in North Co, UT or Wyoming should we be sure to find? We are natural attraction kind of family more than man made tourist stops. Anything across Kansas or OK?

Do more then find Mt Rushmore. Find the Black Hills. Needles Hwy in Custer State Park is a must.

Don't drive past the Badlands NP on your way to the Black Hills/Mt Rushmore, it is worth the short excursion from the interstate whether you just drive through or get out and hike some of its trails.

Devil's Tower in Wyoming is great. For me it was worth camping there just to see the sunset & sunrise on the tower.

Bighorn Mtns in Wyoming are quite impressive to over or take the alternate route through the state of Montana, one of my favorite states to drive though with its uplifted mountain blocks.

You can't go wrong on any route in the area.

The Mirror Lake Scenic Drive in the Uinta Mountains of Northern Utah is amazing. It is just south of the Wyoming and Teton Range. Also, Dinosaur National Monument has some amazing canyon views and a huge wall (called the Dinosaur Quarry) of bones still in place where they were found. It is absolutely amazing. There are plenty of outfitters that run daily trips through Split Mountain Canyon as well in Dino (Adrift and Hatch Expeditions for sure do). Fishing all around the Uinta's is amazing. Colorado National Monument in Grand Junction, Colorado is like a taste of Moab without having to go out of the way. Black Canyon of the Gunnison is also an amazing canyon on the way back to Arkansas.

I will be at a class for work in Bend, OR that week, but I'm planning on making it up to boat on the White Salmon the following week. C'mon and paddle with us!

Some of the Cabellas stores like in Sidney Nebraska are great for young and old to visit. They have a grille in that location that serves bison and elk burgers and other dishes, and great mounted wildlife displays.
