Crooked Creek - Cleanup, Float, and Crayfish May 18, 2013

Post by Cowper » Fri May 03, 2013 3:19 pm

Just got this in an e-mail, hope I can make it. With a 1:30 PM launch, it is even within the realm of possibility that some of us could be on time! Except that I should have edited it to say "meet at 12:30"

Friends of the North Fork and White Rivers invites YOU to get to know and appreciate Crooked Creek by participating in a Float and Clean Up Trip
on Saturday, May 18th, 2013.
• We'll be floating a short section of Crooked Creek; Kelly's Slab to Yellville, (apprx 3 miles).
• Time to meet is 1:00 p.m. with a 1:30 launch.
• Float will be limited to 36-40 participants.
• Floaters provide their own canoes, or kayak, and beverage.
More details on our website. http://www.friendsoftherivers.org/2013/ ... -may-18th/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Volunteers will assist with shuttles and your return to Fred Berry Education Center. Our Clean Up is registered with American Rivers 2013 Cleanup This makes you part of a bigger picture!

Additional Note: If you go to their website, you'll learn that this is also an organizational fund-raiser, so they are collecting money for the after-float supper. Debbie tells me this organization is highly active in watershed issues, so rack it up to "good cause!"

Is anybody else going to this float. I was thinking about trying paddle the Buffalo Sunday morning, I hate to drive all the way up to Yellville for a short float.

I don't think I've ever done the exact stretch they are cleaning up, but I'm sure it is a relatively easy float. As far as I know, the last time Debo went she and one other canoe were the only swimmers. I forget the details... ;)

I really wanted to go, but it is the same day as the Saline River Canoe Race, so I'm going to be forced to choose one, and the one closer to home will likely win out. I may just take a boat and clean the Saline instead...

Easy flat slow clear water with gravel bottom riffles. Short enough to hike. Not a whole lot of trash in this segment -- mostly around the bridges proper and below the bluffs at Yellville -- I think this section was selected more for ease of access and popularity than "need". Hopefully consideration will be given to cleaning Town Branch and Shawnee Creek -- two tributaries that cut through the center of town, Yellville, and thus serve as conduits for litter, etc. A most worthwhile project.

I am going to this (had Fri-Sat reserved for a NW Ark paddle) & am looking for somewhere to paddle Friday, prob Cadron (if any body's going) or Buffalo. I need one new stream to have doubled my "life list" since I retired 6 years ago. Crooked Creek will be # 56, up from 28 in 2007!!

Hey Louis, I look forward to seeing you. I was planning on trying to paddle Sunday, but something came up and I have to be back early that morning. I am going to camp Friday and Saturday night at Bullshoals State Park.

Looking forward to paddling with you Edgar.

Any chance of you getting off Friday to paddle the Cadron on the way up? I can leave here about 4:00 am and meet you there around 10:00 ish? If not, see you Saturday.

And a HUGE THANK YOU TO COWPER for posting this!! I would not have known about it otherwise and I am very excited to get to participate. It's a rare treat when my schedule and these type events click on a trip from down here!!

Louis, I'm not sure what time I can leave on Friday, I don't think it will
be that early.

I'd like to do this, but holy schnikeys! That's a long drive for a short float. Plan A is to paddle with Clan Crawford Saturday, but if that falls through I may head to Yellville provided the event is not oversubscribed come decision time. Stay tuned........
You come too.

Hi Luke and Edgar:

If anyone's up for some morning paddlin' I'm in for it too. We could do shuttle, fish/paddle a short section, then join the cleanup. Sounds like a good idea.
