Year Round Whitewater?

Post by Cotton_Eye_Bo » Tue May 14, 2013 8:33 pm

Are there any rivers in the state that are generally floatable year round that have some good whitewater in them. Class II to III would be nice. I am probably not experienced enough for anything more, but I would be open to try a little. I have been canoeing several times, but I am just getting into kayaking and haven't learned the rivers too well yet. I floated the Cadron a couple weeks ago and it was a very nice float. Beats the middle Buffalo any day. I've learned that it tends to run low pretty quickly, though. I have never been on the Spring River, but have heard its a nice one. Seems everything else I've seen is pretty seasonal.

Word on the street is something's broken at the dam and rockport releases will only be 2400 this summer.

The broken generator may cut into the weekday releases but there will still be at least three hours of full flow every Saturday and Sunday. That gives about an hour of decent play, Maybe a little bit more if we get lucky and they are able to prime it at the 2400 CFS release prior to going to full flow

Check out "Caddo River 1", "Ouachita River 1", and "Little Missouri Tailwater" at

I'll be updating the take-out for Caddo River 1 shortly. It's at a canoe rental service on the opposite side of Highway 67 now and will be opening this Friday, 5/17/13.

Thanks guys. I will check these out. I know my hopes are a little high, but I had to ask. I'm really looking forward to exploring all the rivers and creeks in the state.

Wow..
Bad news about Rockport mid week releases. I hope that some days mid week they can do full releases, but oh we'll what can I do. I'll be there when I can on weekends
