Post by gannon311 » Wed May 01, 2013 6:27 am

Found a sidekike for $200.... But it's way up north. Anybody ever shipped a kayak? Think its 37 lbs and 7 ft long

Shipped a 14' Canoe on Southwest Motor Transport. They taped and tied cardboard around it and stuck it in an 18 wheeler. I think the cost was $100. Check with some freight companies around you and they can tell you what you need. Ask about insurance.

Where up north? You can ship stuff via airlines and sometimes it's cheaper.

to back up panicman's advice, a bud of mine set up shipment via grayhound and it was the cheapest way. There is a limit on length that most play kayaks meet but long creekers do not. If memory correct his was a short jackson fun series kayak.

Amtrak is also another shipping method. I've not used it, just seen it listed on their website.

I had my Hero shipped from somewhere up north for $70-$100. Air America or trans America or something. Its downtown off E broadway. kind of vague I know, but that's all I remember. If I can find out more, I will post.

On another note, did you ever end up floating Winona all the way down to the low covered bridge (5 miles or so)?

I've used ForwardAir in the past, but you'd have to check on the nearest terminals.

I just checked our company website http://www.swacargo.com/swacargo/rateQuoteEntry.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You can ship it next flight guaranteed from Minneapolis to Little Rock for $80.

Forward air is the most kayak friendly shipper for someone without a freight company contract. But may not be the cheapest. Figure $100-120 for 7 foot boat. Boat must be wrapped. It can insured only if boxed/crated. F Air will only ship from terminal to terminal w/o a contract.

greyhound has a 7 foot limit so you may be in luck.
