O.T. Richie Havens

Post by Jim Krueger » Tue Apr 23, 2013 3:16 pm

I was sure sad to hear of the passing (yesterday) of folk singer Richie Havens. He had a talent and style that endeared
himself to so many, including me.

Rest In Peace Richie

Jim, count me in as a fan of his music as well. We are losing a lot of these early on rock / folk pioneers. Public TV almost always has special programming around the time they raise money, when they show case these long time musicians.

Thanks for your note Dave! I thought Richie was 'So Cool' when I was a college student at Henderson in the early seventies, he has been one of the few musical artists that have still remained in the highest esteem for me personaly as I have grown a bit older! I still remember quizzing our math teacher in 1970 (he was the Jr.-Sr. Prom Coordinator) about whether they might even consider our request to try and book 'The Doobie Brothers' as a dance band for our prom, he nixed that idea shortly :D We should have been better at our studies. That was a funny sidenote...

Richie Havens was an older singer when I was a college student, even back then though, I thought he was 'So
Hip','So Cool'. We will all miss him!

Best Regards
Jim

Richie Havens performed for a crowd of about 100 people at a venue here in Fort Smith probably 8 or so years ago.

I had no idea what to expect when I went to the show other than I was going to see the guy that opened Woodstock!

It was one of the most memorable performances I have ever witnessed. He was a wonderful entertainer and so laid back. It was a great show.

We tried to have him back a couple of years ago and he had to cancel for health reasons. Glad I got to see him when I did!

Not only did he open he set the stage for what became the most listened to music festival ever.

Would have loved to have been there, have several different sets of Woodstock LP's and now CD's of the festival. Amazing how many "legends to be" performed there and ole Richie threw down the music marker for the rest who showed up.
