Mesh trash bags

Post by 737driver » Sat Apr 06, 2013 9:31 am

Where can I get some of those orange mesh trash bags? I'm taking some Boy Scouts to float the Buffalo in a few weeks and I want to have them pick up any trash they see along the way.

Arkansas game & fish is where I've gotten them from. I can't remember the guy's name that's over the stream team but I will look in my email and text it to you. He should be able to hook you up with whatever you need.

Debo and I still have a large supply as well. If your path to the Buffalo goes through Conway, our place is only about 0.3 mile out of the way, I'm sure we could come out to the highway and hand you some as you come through.

P.S. - The REASON we have a large supply is because AG&F wants us to be handing them out; if anybody else needs some let us know.

In all seriousness, I would just look in the trash cans or next to the trash cans at any access point on the Buffalo that has receptacles. I guarantee that you will find mesh bags (some full, some nearly empty, maybe even some empty). If you go this route, which I would highly recommend it, show the scouts a good example by sorting out all the recyclables from the trash. I guarentee the majority of what is in the trash cans/mesh bags will be recyclable. I wish people would pack out there recyclables. It's not like it's that difficult. Anyway, that's my two cent suggestion.

It is amazing how many are tossed after only 1 use.

I was not aware of about 400 that have been reused for several years until today when I opened a shed at the lake fayetteville environmental study center :wht: they shines like gold instantly even though they had years of soil and grime on them.

FYI- NWA folk, I will be getting a resupply from stream team coordinator Dave Evans tomorrow at the lake cleanup so holler if you need any.

I worked in produce for a few years in a grocery store chain, and these river mesh trash bags are exactly the same as the sacs that onions came in. We threw away dozens every week as we emptied the sacs and stocked the onion bins.

This is where I get mine here in Tennessee. They are the same bags without the sponsor labels and they are reusable. Unfortunately, we don't have the floater litter laws here that Arkansas has. But I still follow the Arkansas regulations.

Several have made good points that if your goal is to comply with the law by having a Mesh Bag (or other sturdy container), then there is no need to spend gas $$$ and increase your "carbon footprint" by driving all over the state to hook up with someone that has the AGFC bags.

BUT - the "official" bags do have one thing that makes them at least worth talking about:

They are printed with a few key points of the law; enough that if you follow just those points you shouldn't be getting a ticket under this law (no glass, fasten cooler lids, Use the litter bag, and use a floating holder for beverages)

So, the bags are good for educating others as well as holding litter. I don't see them as being needed on our micro-creeks or winter runs where everything is in a drybag anyway, but I'd like to see everyone keep a small supply in their car or truck, to hand out to other boaters during spring and summer runs on the Class 1 and Class 2 streams. Its a good friendly way to educate the newer boaters who may not be familiar with the law.
