Just in case no one else has heard about this....
I was in an Oklahoma tag office yesterday getting my drivers license renewed and saw a poster stating that canoes, kayaks, and other "paddleboats" would no longer need to be registered / licensed in the state of Oklahoma effective July 01, 2013. The poster said that if you purchase or "bring a canoe into the state" ** prior to June 30, 2013 you would need to register it. The registration would then expire 6-30-13 and no further registration would be required.
** I assume that "bring a boat into the state" means you are an OK resident with the intent of using the boat on state waters. ??
The information on the poster was much more comprehensive, but here is the synopsis from the Oklahoma Tax Commission Legislative Update 2012
******************
Miscellaneous: Boat and Motor Registration Fees and Excise Tax
House Bill 3093 - Effective July 1, 2013
Exempts canoes and paddleboats from the title and registration requirements of the Oklahoma Vessel and Motor Registration Act and the imposition of the vessel excise tax. Also defines a canoe as a light narrow boat with both ends sharp which is propelled by paddling and includes similar craft such as kayaks, and a paddleboat as a boat less than 8 feet in length designed to be propelled solely by human power through a belt, chain or gears. 63 OS § 4002

If I understand this correctly, then here's to not having to put those unsightly OK registration stickers on canoes and kayaks.
Disclaimer: Be sure to double check with your local OK tag agency. :)

Helgramite,
Man alive, that is great news to us Oklahoma canoe and kayak owners.
those state stickers generally fall off kayaks anyway and look bad on any craft especially canoes and kayaks
thanks for the news, I will check with the local tag agency and see if they know anything about it

Yup i have been told this is true by my tag agent as well. I tagged my XP10's last year when i bought them but just carry all the stickers with me and have not stuck them on either boat due to this and lake patrol has been kind so far.

I also learned of this several weeks ago. It's a shame the tag office didn't inform me before I purchased three year tags for two canoes
