WTB Canoe
WTB Canoe
Looking for a jack of all trades/ camping boat.
Class II at the most, able to track fairly well in flat water, sometimes tandem, sometimes solo, able to load down for multi day camping trips, etc.
I know that a boat probably doesn't exist that does ALL these things well.
From everything I have read, it looks like something along the lines of a Mad River Explorer would be what I'm looking for, but I am open to other boats, as long as they will cover the bases I mentioned as well as can be expected. 14 to 16 feet, leaning more toward 16.
Royalex sounds like the material for my needs.
I have a Mohawk XL15 and would like something a little less whitewater oriented for camping, trash pick ups, etc.
Price will have to depend on the boat and condition, but i have a limit up to about $600.00
I would hope that will be enough to buy a nice boat in the class that I am looking for.
I have called on the recent craigslist ads and nothing has panned out.

Thanks,
Ken Wallace

For a bit more on your budget, get a new one.

I've been there already. Just checking to see if someone has one gathering dust in the garage.

Re: WTB Canoe
The Intrepid apparently has some issues with being able to view it. They did call back to say I could come see it during a narrow window, but I was too busy.
I actually drove up to look at the Explorer, but just could not commit to it. Can't really say why, other than it being above my budget. I'm not sure if I would be breaking any etiquette by giving details, but I'll say there seems to be a pretty good deal on a boat North of Fayetteville.
Somewhere out there is a guy who is tired of moving that canoe he doesn't use as much as he thought he would out of the way every time he needs in the garage, and has been saying to himself "I ought to just sell this thing", but has procrastinated about putting it up for sale. This post is for him.
Those boats are out there. My XL15 was one. Probably hadn't seen water 5 times.
I'm just turning over a few more rocks with this post and trying to do my diligence.
I appreciate all the comments, and I will probably check with the rental fleets as Clif suggested.

Re: WTB Canoe
I'll sell my personal Blue Arkota for 650.00 she's got some use but solid over all. I've moved the seats once.
The Arkota makes a great camping boat. If your gonna stick to the rivers it's an awesome canoe check out the gear board for some reviews.

Louis,
Thanks for showing me around your facility while putting up with all my questions about the process.
Most of all, thanks for the boat!
Luke,
Nobody ever gets excited over a race between the same brands.
I hearby throw down the gauntlet to that boat with the rabbit that looks like it listens to Bob Marley.

Re: WTB Canoe
They're not the same color, and they're not really the same brand. His is an Alkota. As for the pipe smokin' bunny, you'll have trouble goading him into a race as he's like me; built for comfort, not for speed.

(Picks gauntlet back up and dusts it off)...
Re: WTB Canoe
Not to worry. We can use said gauntlet when it comes time to lift the lid off the Dutch Oven to check the cobbler.Farmbus wrote:(Picks gauntlet back up and dusts it off)...
