U of A roll session now $10?

Post by Dan Daniel » Mon Oct 29, 2012 4:04 pm

Hi All,
Just wondering if the $10 non-university fee is correct. That's double the last ones... Plus they allways give you grief when you try to teach/help anyone out. Whats the deal?
Thanks
Dan

Yes, that is correct.

Apparently, they are wanting to refocus their sessions on students and HPER members and less on the community.

No. The UA sessions are few and far between: http://urec.uark.edu/7541.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

These are the last two of the semester.

Here's what I learned last night. Tomorrow will be the "last" roll session for a long time. The U of A has decided not to teach the roll anymore and will be teaching "strokes and concepts" classes. The idea is that if you have good solid strokes and concepts, you'll never need to roll. Very "Derick Hutchinson"(RIP). When I asked what certifications the new teacher would have, I got a "shoulder-shrug" for an answer. So, I'm curious what exactly this means. Will the new teacher be ACA certified Instructor? Or will the new teacher be like the guy who's been teaching the roll, who barely has one himself?
Anyway, good luck U of A.

The instructors at UA have not been ACA instructors since I have been around (starting in 2010).

Being a former employee of the OCC, I know first hand that it is very difficult for them to justify any WW-focused events because it is impossible to schedule their trips in city where the closest truly predictable whitewater is 10+ hours away. (The OCC schedules all trips 2 months or so before the start of each semester, meaning that they are always 4+ months before prime paddling seasons in October and April/May. As we know from this past year, you can't assume there will be water any given weekend.)

I am very sorry to see OCC pull back from WW even more than they have, but I think there may be an opportunity in this for the NWA chapter. We are now the only game in town for roll sessions. I think we could get the OCC to recommend us, and put up flyers for our roll sessions. Who knows, we might even be able to schedule an ACC roll session at the HPER on a week night in addition to our Jones Center sessions on Saturday mornings.

Looking on the bright side,

Shep,

The closest, truly dam-released river is the Mountain Fork river in Oklahoma- a cool 3 hours away. 3 miles of flat water, Class II and 1 Class III (pushing to a mile of Class III/IV in flood state), including one heck of a playwave. It's the most under-appreciate stretch of whitewater near Arkansas, and it runs year round. Check it:

That being said, I know that my information is being spoken to the wrong people. Just wanted to spread the word.

Clearly I need to broaden my horizons! :)

Give me a holler if we're dry in NWA, and you want to carpool down there some weekend.

What Micah says about the Lower Mountain Fork (my home water's if you will) is true but...they haven't generated anything but 1/2 unit for several months now!!! The 1/2 unit is only for water temperature managment in order to sustain the trout population and that water isn't enough to even sneeze at. It briefly gets up to 400 c.f.s. and then right back down. Good play starts at a miniumum of 800 c.f.s in my opinion, preferring 1200 c.f.s and up. The LMF is a usual Summer playspot for me but haven't been there yet this year, for the lack of water.
