kayaking the Arkansas River

Post by Wendy » Sun Sep 30, 2012 4:36 pm

Hi! I am a relative new member to the ACC and to kayaking in general. My interest right now lies in kayaking on the Arkansas River, which I have been doing for about three months. It has been a learning process for me. For other novices, such as myself, who have an interest in kayaking on the Arkansas, I have created a blog about my experiences on it. I would love to post other people's experiences as well. Many people shy away from the Arkansas River, but so far I have found it to be pretty awesome. I hope to meet other people who think so too. The blog site is http://kayakthearkansas.weebly.com/index.html.

Thanks! Wendy Hedrick

I just started paddling the Arkansas this summer. I prefer waters with a little more current, but when the water is low I went to the Arkansas river several times. On one trip I went upstream from Little Rock towards the Natural Steps. The Natural Steps are on private property, and from what I could see in the water they were rather unimpressive, but there's an interesting island just across from it. There's also some pretty good views of Pinnacle Mountain along that stretch.

Thanks for the recommendation! I think I found the island you are referring to on Google Maps. I have not made it that far up the river, but I will make sure I check it out now. Where did you launch from? Maumelle Park?

It really is amazing what you might find on the Arkansas River.

Wendy
I was nice meeting you on the Arkansas River the other day
Fall paddling on the River is great, plenty of colors and wild life .
I always check the water flow before I go out. This been a very unusual year since there has
been hardly any flow since May.
I will paddle it up to about 90k after that it makes it pretty wild around down town around the bridges.
Here is where I check
