Lifeproof Cases for Iphone

Post by Cowper » Wed Oct 03, 2012 9:53 am

Are these any good? Any advantages compared to Otterbox or other cases, from a paddlers perspective? Tell it all Brother Doug!

Disclosure: I already know the answers, but Doug has some first hand experience which I think belongs here in the gear review archives.

i just bought the iPhone 5 and they don't make one for it yet.. however i had one on my 4s, as long as you keep the screw in plug in the headphone jack then you'll be fine. i took underwater video/pictures with it on mine. 30$ more then an otter box but worth every penny

I also have the life proof case for my iPhone. In addition, I have purchased a life vest for my life proof case. It has been very helpful for me as I dropped my phone in the river and didn't realize it was gone until I saw it floating in front of me! I love it!

I'm still trying to figure out why people take a phone on the river...
Maybe they can make a life case for my fax too.

Why would someone take a phone on the river?

To call wife as promised at certain time

To call to check on son at certain time

To call for shuttle

To take photos or video

To call for emergency - yours or someone else's

To call to set up dinner with other folks off river or tell them where you are camping

AND YES, I did lose my last phone on the river when a raft full of drunks rammed into the back of my legs, just as I was openning my ammo box to hand my phone to someone else to use.

Eric, I was just giving Doug a ribbing. Obviously not everyone knows our relationship and sarcasm doesn't relay well in typed messages.

That being said, I have been impressed with what Doug's phone withstood.

I actually have a Lifeproof case for my fax, but the weak link is the paper.

I took "keyboarding" at Jonesboro High School in 1988. The machines were red IBM Selectrics. They were dead sexy.

I understand that Otterbox is finally coming out with an actually waterproof case now that Lifeproof has embarrassed them. I believe it will be $30-40 more expensive though. I'm glad I bought my Lifeproof case. I don't think it is bombproof, and I still keep my phone in a dampbag (sorry, I mean "dry"bag) when I'm not using it, but now I'm willing to carry it. I most often use my phone as a convenient video camera since I think GoBro footage gets old if used to much.

Hope this helps,
Paul

I'm going to have to get something soon. I slipped in the Cossatot recently with both my and my wif'es phones in my pockets! They were both in otter boxes, so they didn't get too wet. I still ended up buying a bag of rice back in Wickes for mine though...the sound had stopped working. lol

I often carry mine in a Pelican box when I'm soloing on my local run. I can get a signal from the falls, so I usually stop for lunch and give my wife a call. I've actually had a good enough signal to upload a picture to facebook even. It's good fun torturing the people stuck at work! :P

My wife and I both bought Lifeproof cases. I have taken video underwater in pools, creeks, and the ocean. The cases withstand dropping well and the company honors the warranty on the case flawlessly. They send what you need replaced with return postage and ask that you send the broken piece back. The weakest link is the charger door. Since most people prefer to have a charged phone, the charger door gets opened quite frequently and eventuall develops a crack at the elbow. The only gripes I really have about it is: they are only garaunteed for a year VS. the otterbox lifetime (and they only get that if you log on to their site and register for it), without the screw in earphone adapter, the only headphones that work are Apple or lifeproof due to the diameter of the hole, and finally, most aftermarket charger cords will not fit in the opening at the charger door area. These are all small issues compared to the overall grand scheme of this wonderful game we call life.

I may not know jack about kayaking, paddles, drysuits, rolling, or boats in general, but I know iPhone and iPhone accessories.

I have developed the crack which James refers to. I should've sent it in last year... maybe not too late! The bummer is I will have to replace the entire back to fix the cracked door.
