Xp10 spray skirt
Xp10 spray skirt
I'm new to kayaking and bought an xp 10 this summer. I bought a spray skirt (no I didn't go to ooo like I should have) it's a bomber gear xxl which acoording to liquid logics web site and bomber gear it's suppose to be the right size but I have a horrible time getting it on. What brand and size are other people with xp 10s using and are y'all having a hard time getting them on?

Re: Xp10 spray skirt
I can't think if the kind if skirt I have, but I, too, have an xp10 and feel like a weakling when I try to put it on. I have only been successful in sealing the skirt maybe 3-4 times without some sort of assistance (must have eaten my spinach that day, idk). One suggestion is to wade out in the river and get it wet before trying to stretch it on. That has worked at least twice for me. Good luck, and if I see ya on the river after a wet exit, I'll try to help you...but only if you'll help me!

Re: Xp10 spray skirt
I have an XP10 and my daughter an XP9 and we have IR Luckycharm skirts. I'll have to look up the deck sizes but I'd guess XXL and XL. Those were the recommended sizes.
I can get mine on/off easily but my daughter can't. Problem is, my cockpit is near the bottom of the fit range whereas hers is at the top.
And being rand style skirts probably doesn't help her in the stretching department.

Re: Xp10 spray skirt
Snapdragon makes some bungie-style skirts that are designed to be easy on. I discovered years ago that the amount of leakage difference between bungie-style and rand-style isn't enough to bother me, just a few more sponge-fulls per day or less.

Their easiest-on neoprene skirt is probably the RIver Trek, which I think would work just fine on an XP-10. It uses 3.5mm neoprene (vs. 4 mm) to make it even easier to get on. I've gone with the Armortek versions (different model) to get something a bit more durable for creeking, but it still goes on easier than most other brands. Due to the size of the XP-10 cockpit, I'd suggest you consider getting one with the implosion bar.
The other reason I like the bungie style skirts is that I find I can hop out of the boat without the skirt hanging on the cockpit rim, for example to scout a rapid or run down the bank to assist someone else. In creeking, you sometimes have to get out in awkward places, like hanging on to a bush just above a drop with no eddy, so "easy off" is about more than just whether or not you can do a wet exit.

Re: Xp10 spray skirt
I have an XP-9 that I'm using the Bomber Gear XXL spray skirt with... needed a little help w/it first time getting it on also. But since then it seems to go on w/o any problem.. just soak it real good first.

Your starting comment, and Dee's, are the "short" answer. Bop on down to OOO and let them work with you until you find one you're happy with. What is "too tight" for one person may seem OK for another. And/Or come to Rendezvous, look for other XP-10's, and ask to try their skirt.
Browsing the internet, I learned the XP-10's cockpit is 2" longer than the XP-9 so what fits the 9 could be a bear or impossible on the 10, don't trust the manufacturer's numbers because some measure rim-to-rim while others measure inner diameters, and so on.
Also, if you paddle in cold weather, you may find the skirt that was OK in the summer can still be a real bear on a chilly spring morning. Dipping the skirt in the water so you can get it on is also less appealing under winter/spring conditions.

I used a XXL IR Lucky Charm on an XP10 for the Grand Canyon. It was a good fit and pretty easy to get on.sig wrote:I have an XP10 and my daughter an XP9 and we have IR Luckycharm skirts. I'll have to look up the deck sizes but I'd guess XXL and XL. Those were the recommended sizes.

I have no problem getting mine on, I think it fits just right. My daughters is too tight for her to do herself.

I'm very happy with my IR Shockwave. Fits the XP10 well and not difficult to snap on.
