Fire on the Mountain

Post by Jim Krueger » Mon Aug 06, 2012 1:26 pm

With the little rainfall situation and heat this summer not a day passes without mention of wildland fires somewhere.
Last saturday, when we were making our usual 'Remmel dam to Rockport' float, I was especially sorry to see results of a fire on the face of the beautiful bluff across from the Haskins Res. (about halfway through the trip)
It looks like several acres of the bluff face forest burned. I can't tell how much if any on top and beyond were affected but it did look like maybe it started on the top rather than from the river up., It will take years for the smut and soot to leave the rocks again :(
I have not checked the forestry website or local news media for any additional info. but did wonder if any of you had any idea of what the situation was.

Best Regards
Jim

Jim-are you sure that is fire damage and not just dead trees? We have a lot of trees in the "Village" that look like this.Lack of rain and/or pine bark beetles can decimate a forrest quickly. ann

I looked at it pretty closely last weekend and could see the blackened tree trunks and rocks, also could smell it.
Plan to float back past there again tomorrow.

Best Regards
Jim

Good to hear you are back on the water. How's that knee now?

Hey Capt.!

The knee is not 100% but much better. One of my old friends&coworkers from Henderson and I paddled
the Remmel stretch today. We had a great float and saw several eagles in the area at the top of the burned bluff.
The drop in temps from 100+ to the low 90s today made me want to stand in the sun after the few dips in the water I made today :D

Best Regards
Jim

Sounds good. Maybe you'll catch a Little Mo float before the summer is over.
