Snake! Need ID

Post by GN YAKN » Tue Jul 03, 2012 4:17 pm

This snake was seen on a recent mountain bike ride by a buddy. Is it a rattler? I'm going with Timber Rattler

Definatly a rattler . I've heard 'em calleda "velvet tail" but I believe timber rattler and velvet tail are the same thing - not positive on that . Pretty common around the San Bois Mts. around McCurtain

Timber rattler in the mountains, Canebrake rattler in the lowlands. Same snake, depends on locale. And the one in the pic is big enough to make a sore place on your leg.

Very nice! Timber Rattler aka Canebreak aka Velvet Tail is a beautiful snake. Although venemous they are very mild mannered and reluctant to bite.

Here's a beauty from Devil's Den near Junction Camp down by Lee Creek from back in 2010. Very calm and, though I kept my distance, wasn't threatening at all.

I saw this little guy hanging out in the campground area at Hare Mountain during my canoe school OHT death march. She rattled one time but otherwise barely moved. It's the first one I've seen since I moved here from South Dakota. We had a bunch of them up there. Beautiful!
