Got a Rockport question...

Post by WhiteOak1 » Tue Jun 05, 2012 9:40 pm

We plan on floating and fishing from the dam to Rockport tomorrow. Is the fishing any good and how many miles is it?

DG,

The float from Remmel Dam down to the ramp at the WW park is about five miles. It looks like it will be a minumum flow in the morning and early afternoon until about three o'clock when they will make a small release of about 1200cfs. For fishing, I like the backwater area just downstream of the put-in, it runs parallel to the main stream. I also like the deeper pools a couple of miles down from the put-in. There are also many large boulders down that way to fish around for small mouth and Walleye. Some days, when I want to fish, and don't have time for the float, I put-in at the WW park and fish below the ledge, mainly on the far side and around the boulders. I have caught some decent Walleye as I jigged a tiny bruch hog around the boulders in the deeper water. I have also caught several nice Crappie as I drifted around the deeper water across the river from the ramp. Good luck.
With the river running low, and you fishing, it will be easy to spend five or six hours or more making this section.

Best Regards
jim

I haven't fished the Ouchita myself but when I was paddling from one side of the Rockport ledge to the other yesterday, I saw two LARGE fish surface and jump (sort of scared me!). My sons also saw some large fish when they were playing around. I have no idea what they were. They were all towards the middle of the river.

DG,

Did you make the trip? if so how'd it go, any fish? That section is probably best at low water for fishing but it makes lots of work getting down and through all the boulder sieves all day.

Willie,

Could have been several kinds of fish in the river but my bet is a large Carp
from past experiences.

Best Regards
Jim

We didn't make it Jim. I ran out of time and had to head back to NWA. I hope to float it before the summer's over with though. We did get to fish the lower end of the Little MO about 10-15 miles before it flows into the Ouachita River. We caught some good fish, saw alot of wild hogs, and picked our way through some killer log jams. It was a good trip though.

Later,
DG

DG,

That Remmel Dam float will be there all Summer, I am glad you were able to get out on the Little Mo. to fish and float some though. I'm well familiar with the Little Mo. where it hits the Ouachita at Tates Bluff, I have a farm nearby where I lived thirty plus years before moving to the Benton area.
This Spring has proved to be just too dry, and low river levels, but a friend and I have been wanting to float/explore the last section of the Antoine R. down to the Little Mo., then on down to the game& fish access at Elkins Ferry near Okolona.

Best Regards
Jim
