Looking to move and looking at houses right now and some have pools. Most are vinyl-lined. Any experiences with in-ground pools and kayaks? Does vinyl hold up OK to an occasional hit from a paddle or boat end? Any other pool tips for backyard kayaking?

P.S. Next step will be finding a 500 hp pump to make a surf wave..

i dont think vinyl would hold up very well. Gunnite (?sp) would be the best. Its probably a few thousand to have one covered.

I have a liner and no worries about boat bumping it but the paddle makes me nervous so I just don't hit it. If you get a tear in liner then you just patch it,not a big deal.

Fish, we have a gunite pool with plaster and tile. In a gunite pool the tile is what takes the beating. For the skimmers to work correct the water will be half way on a 6" tile. You will get some scratches on the pool bottom when folks are learning to roll due to pulling the paddle down. As far as holding up, ours has been through all kinds of hits and is holding up fine. A liner is a little different. Depending on the soil type some have concrete walls, sand in the bottom and the bottom to the wall is dirt/sand. If it has a concrete riser(wall) hitting the liner hard could and over time damaged it. Someone slicing their paddle to the bottom could damage it bad. Also launching off the pool deck is ok if you have concrete coping. If a pool has stone coping it will pop it lose over time. If you have any other question let me know. I can email you some pics on what to look for if this is going to be your first pool. Im a licensed commercial and residential pool builder.
Sincerely,
Adam Willard

I agree with Steve. A good vinyl liner will hold up to the ocassional hit with the paddle. Mine was damaged more by lawn furniture blowing in to it.
