MID-BUFFALO MAY 14 - 18 CANCELLED

Post by Louiscov » Wed May 02, 2012 2:31 pm

A group of 6 - 7 will be base camping at Tyler Bend and paddling day sections of the middle Buffalo May 14 - 18. Other paddlers/campers welcomed!

We're Ozark Society Bayou Chapter members (most of us ACC members also). Driving up Sunday May 13, will be on the river the 14th and paddle sections as determined by the river level. Would love to do Mt Hershey to Woolum, Woolum to Tyler Bend or Baker Ford - Gilbert, plus a a lower section. Wednesday the 16th we'll help with the clean-up event. And......if there's water.....one day higher up - Ponca - Kyles with enough rain :D. But undeterred by low water we will be paddling, enjoying the beautiful Buffalo, working on our strokes.

Feel free to post or PM or email for more info.

When you are in the visitors center at Tyler Bend, ask them if you can see a copy of "Gathering at the River" that I left there.

I've been planning a trip for June with my girlfriend (her first river trip) for months. Looks like it's not gonna happen this year....Can you guys run water hoses to the river or something?

The Buffalo is pool shoal pool shoal. It can be very nice so long as you adapt to the situation. Pools can be nice even when it is not ideal for paddling.

It'd be a bit longer drive, but you could always head to the Current River a bit further north in Missouri. Spring fed so it will have water in June. Can get crowded on weekends, but as long as you can coordinate your river camping to sundays/mid week, it would be great. Not the Buffalo, but still a very pretty river, and having water vs. not having water is a pretty important advantage when planning a river trip!

If by any freak chance we get some rain again in the state, just fall back on your original Buffalo plan.
I've heard that into every life a little of it must fall,
but you'll never catch me complaining about too much of that southern rain.

The Current River in southern Missouri mentioned in Lupe's post above is an excellent similar alternate to the Buffalo. It is fed by springs that pump from 30 - 100+ million gallons of water a day, and while a little low itself it will have water to float. Parts of it are really similar to the mid Buffalo, Hasty to Buffalo Point. The Current has more consistent flow (no pools) and even clearer water, the Buffalo bigger drops and shoals. Both are class I.

In late April I floated Round Springs to Two Rivers. It was 18 miles of water that moved the entire way, with some chutes moving 3.5 - 4.7 mph measured by gps. It has distant mountain vistas similar to the mid Buffalo, with plenty of gravel bars for camping. We did it in one day (6 1/2) hrs. but it would make a super remote overnighter. On a Monday we saw no boats but numerous osprey, eagles, deer. It has some nice bluffs and rock faces. Some great hikes are in the area.

Above there you could do Akers Ferry to Round Springs and camp at Pulltite campground (water, restrooms, very nice) or river camp. Definitely more river traffic on this stretch but weekdays should be fine.

Call Two Rivers or Akers Ferry canoe rentals for more info & shuttle &water level questions, or ask follow up questions here or pm me. Hope you get to make your trip!

I mentioned the Current and she said she didn't want to drive that far. I know it's not that much different considering we're comign from Houston but she thinks it is.
We're doing a 5 day trip but I'd have to leave on June the 3rd and be back by June 10th. I'm praying for rain, the fallback plan is the Neches River in East Texas unless I can convince her to go to the Current. We'll have a 16' canoe and 2-15 foot kayaks on top of a Subaru so the long drive is a bit of an issue. Who knows, I see a little rain in the long range forcast, maybe we'll get lucky. If I can get Gilbert to turn green I'm good to go.

Some people would think that's a pretty light load for a Subie... ;)

So, how many gallons to the mile are you getting?
Seriously though, I know I can haul everything up there. It's just that driving for 12 hours with that much gear is a bit much...:)
My last trip in the spring I bucked a 25 mph headwind almost the whole way up and gas killed me. Going through the mountains with 3 boats and a stout wind wouldn't be fun. Not saying I won't do it if the river comes up, it just won't be fun...:)
