Near drowning last may on the Caddo River Mom speaks

Post by Karla » Tue Feb 28, 2012 10:21 pm

Last summer when some of our club members were on the Caddo River a girl named Deanna Watson flipped her canoe and was pinned under water then groups of the club and others went into action to save her life. She suffered a tacheal tear and required a chest tube while in the Hospital ICU and on venetalator. She quickly recovered by the quick reaction at the scene and the life saving work of Arkansas Children's Hospital. I can brag, I work at Childrens' and have now 15 years. I spent many years working in the PICU where Deanna was.

Her mom got in touch with me and wanted me to post a note that Deanna is doing 100? after treatments she had. She is planning to go into the Navy soon. If someone still has the pics that were taken of the resque that could be place on this topic.

Deanna, we are so happy for your recovery and that you came out of this scarry thing all whole again and safe. If you ever feel you are not done paddling rivers, we should take you along with a ark. canoe club group all wearing safety gear, main one the PFD(Personal flotation device. If paddling a helmet might be helpful and if water cold some drywear and proper clothing for the cold water in early season.
Will try someone to post pics of the day they rescued you. Check back on here for more information about the club.

Karla-thanks for the up-date. I think about Deanna often and am glad she can realize her dream of going to the Navy. It was a very scary scene but we were lucky to have two nurses and an EMT who could read her vital signs much better than I could-her classmates were the heroes-they did not give up and finally pulled her out of the river. She may not have made it if it were not for Children's Hospital-we are lucky to have that in our state. One of the top in the nation. You must be proud to work there.SYOTR-Ann

Yes, Ann, I am very proud to work at Ark. Children's Hospital. This week they are celebrating 100 years. I love working here and what I do. I use to work in the PICU where DeAnna was for many years and have seen many miracles there. They are soon having their radiothon where 98.5 radio station helps raise money and you hear storiies of patients here and past.
