Pig blood in the river

Post by Big Daddy D » Sat Jan 21, 2012 5:31 pm

Sadly, a local meat packing company was discovered to be dumping pig's blood into Cedar Creek which runs into the Trinity. Cedar Creek feeds into the Trinity about 200 - 300 yards below the whitewater park. Here's the news report.

It was pure luck that someone took aerial photos and caught them. I'm glad the creek is downstream of the playpark, but it's little consolation. You can Google Map, Columbia Meat Packing Company on 11 street, Dallas, to see it's relationship to the river and park.

I'm really at a loss here. Hopefully, one day the Trinity will be valued in Dallas and not just seen as a sewer through the city. Hope they nail these guys.

Big DD, sad as it seems this is not uncommon even in areas with streams that are much more cleaner than the Trinity. Several years ago was in Jasper for a wedding. Staying at the hotel that is just across from the Little Buffalo. Got up early that morning to go toss a lure for relaxation there in town.

In my exploring, I came across a foul stench and water pollution. It's source turned out to be an overflow sewage valve of the city's. We turned it in to ADEQ, but I could bet there was little or no repercussion even with the individual responsible.

Amazing how we treat our most valuable resources.

Roger, I agree with you. And, it makes me wonder what people are thinking.

These days, what is tossed in a local stream goes into someones drinking water supply down stream. Most water is reused a bunch.

Maybe the deep down aquifers still have pure water but my take is they are going dry at a rapid rate.

My fourth grader Preston was quite affected by this weekend news report, and the fact that my friends and I paddle here. He is going to do his science project on this. We are going to collect samples of water and mud around the discharge pipe and see what grows in agar and petri dishes, as compared to the water from Lake Arlington (the raw water supply for the city of Arlington) and a "control" of sterile water. We are going to go canoeing soon to pick up the samples. I'll attach some photos later of what grows, uggh! The thoughtless or insidious action of this company is despicable and reprehensible!
