SUP--finally got to try it

Post by Mike_P » Thu Jan 19, 2012 5:27 pm

Got to paddle a stand up paddleboard for the first time...on the ocean. Pretty fun, but took me a while to "stand up". So much easier when kneeling!

Seems like these boards have no secondary stability (I paddled a "hard" board). Wonder if the inflatables would have more secondary stability?

I can see why people say they would make a river a "class harder". For me probably about 3 classes harder! Could make a class I river a lot of fun.

The real ocean style boards are much tippier than the river-focused boards. It's all relative. The ocean boards are designed to be less tippy than a traditional surfboard, but they also can't carve turns as well on a wave. How choppy the water was can make a huge difference on trying to get up for the first time. The river-focused boards like the liquid-logic Versa are definitely more stable, but still less stable than a WW canoe or kayak.

Yeah I was in the breaking waves after about 30-45 min I was able to stand up and paddle the board all the way in to the beach. I have a better appreciation for surfers!

For the record, in my limited time in the ocean, I mostly just tired out my arms. Never caught a wave on a SUP, or on a surfboard. 8)
