Fish, most of us in the Springfield/Branson/Harrison area keep an eye on AR Bear, Roark, and Mo Bull Creeks. Any chance they could
show up on the OWP some day?

If you've got the placemarks in Google Earth already, you can click on the folder or place or highlight several placemarks and then right click and pick "Save As". You'll get a popup window that let's you save a KMZ or KML file. I'd love to have the rest of those as well, so if you post them on a dropbox.com or other fileshare, let us know. If I get the coords for those runs, I'll sketch out a watershed for each and post that data so we can put radar data on it to predict when it'll be running.

I gotta go - got some paddling to do this afternoon in Kansas City. :)

Okay, I've got a folder of kmz files in dropbox, but it seems you can't get an address for a whole folder..now what? I'm not going to do them all separate!

Should be able to drop them in your public dropbox folder and then send out a link to that? How many files is it?

I'd be happy to to that, just need to know what USGS gauges to use and what the level thresholds are.

What exactly are the metal bars on the kayak for?

Anytime you folks want to paddle or need a visual on some of the southern Missouri creeks, call Me 417-350-four one four six. I live about 10 minutes from bear and about 10 minutes from bull creeks. Always looking to paddle when it rains if I can get away.

Huck, I'd suggest you attend a spring whitewater clinic put on by omp, acc, or mwa. These will introduce you to the fundamentals of boating, allow you to understand the gear, and most importantly, meet other boaters. That's a great way to start, since this is a social sport, and as a new boater, you can save yourself a lot of time, effort, pain, and possibly ugly swims with really good instruction and friends to boat with.

As for levels of local creeks; I'll put in my $.02 and I'm sure the 417 boaters will have better and smarter input to add:
Bull creek: minimum level, 4.0, optimal level 5.5 too high 9
Roark creek is a visual gauge that as long as the water hits a certain mark on the bridge, it's good to go, I don't know of a gauge that correlates to it.
Turkey creek: call the turkey creek feed store in hollister and ask if the water is touching the pipe that spans the river beneath the bridge. As long as it's touching, its pretty runnable, but the water falls fast, so be on it quickly. Again, I don't know of a gauge that corresponds, visual check is the only way I know of.
Cane, long, and fall creek are other visual check only runs that I don't know enough about to input, but are considered part of our repertoire.

What kind of boat did you get? If you are talking about metal bars inside the boat, it's probably for the bulkhead adjustment. If the metal is on outside, I dunno :wht:

I'd like to take those clinics at some point but right now I don't have the time or money.
I still need a lot of gear too

Those are attachment points for ropes that most creek boats have and they are for pulling your boat out of pins or other nasty situations. The bow and stern are handles and can be used the same as above.

I second the whitewater clinic idea...The Ozark Mountain Paddlers have a clinic also, I believe. I took it when I was 14 or so and it was on the Mulberry river in Arkansas if my memory serves me correctly. Rolling classes would also be a good idea and don't cost much.
