NEW GULPHA CREEK & HOT SPINGS CREEK GAGES NEED CORRELATION

Post by CAPTAIN ALEVE » Wed Apr 27, 2011 11:44 am

There are now gages on Hot Springs Creek (at Grand Ave.) and Gulpha Creek (actually on Mill Creek - a major tributary - at highway 70) that need to be correlated to good paddling levels.

The Gulpha Creek gage is found at:

http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ar/nwis/uv/?s ... cy_cd=USGS" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Bob Stout on Gulpha Creek:

We usually judged the water level by looking at the footing of the eastern most pier of the bridge on Ridgeway Road, downstream side. Water on the footing was enough to get through. If someone can get a visual on the footing and match it to the gage, we would have some useful information. REMEMBER NOT TO PARK ANYWHERE NEAR THE BRIDGE OR THE LAW WILL BE CALLED. Talk to the lady who lives on the southwest corner of the bridge (downstream, river right) and ask for permission to park in her yard.

The Hot Springs Creek gage is found at:

http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ar/nwis/uv/?s ... 0065,00060" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

We usually judge the water level by looking at the masonry apron on the downstream right side of the pedestrian bridge that is just off Shady Grove Road (there is a parking lot across Shady Grove) about a block upsteam of Hollywood Avenue. If the water is just on top of the low edge of the apron, there is enough water to get through.

Anyone in the Hot Springs area want to help out with the correlation?

Hi Mike,
My work schedule has not been cooperating with me getting down to take a look at the HS creek. . . gonna keep trying & will post up when I can get down there after it rains.

Hope your recovery from your surgery is going well.

Great! Keep trying to catch the water on the apron, note the time, and see what the gage reading is at the same time of day.

I may be making some progress with the recovery (less pain), but it is very slow. Much slower than I expected.

The photo of Bob on HS Creek was taken at the big step just below the bridge on Golf Links, the step I tried to point out when we drove by but couldn't stop.

You realize that as soon as I am healed up it is going to quit raining, right?

Hot Springs creek apron is at 8 to 12 inches right now. Hope that helps with the data.

Hot springs is primarily II+ ( like the best parts of the cadron, but continuous for about two miles) There aren't really any pools, and the best action is in the first half of the creek. It's an urban creek, so if that isn't your bag...well it isn't. I love HS creek, and hit it every chance I get. Gulpha Creek is a good one as well, with a couple III's right in the first half mile...esp. at higher water they will come up on you quickly. I think this one is also called Mill creek? Richard and I had some debate on it, and neither of us were too sure what others referred to is as.
There are some uprooted trees on the run about halfway down, with the rootballs right in the middle of the flow, and a couple that you might have to boof. Lots of willows at lower flows. Great run though, and also very urban.
Both runs require good boat control, as the rapids are pretty continuous at the start of the runs.
Gulpha ( the section roadside by the campground) has a really good III+ rapid that is super easy to access.

I keep finding more and more reasons to boat close to home with these big rains. =)
Let us know what you all are heading to tomorrow, if it's in this area, I may be able to go if the creeks are still up.

Just wondering thoughts on if gulpha holds more water longer.. it seems too.
Seems like bull bayou may hold water even longer than gulpha.

thoughts as the water falls!

Want to add these to the OWP gauge page? Any idea what the level is for the start of "optimal" and "high"?

Well Fish. I ran HS creek last night when it was 2.5 and it was a fun level. very little bottom hitting action. I would say boney but doable and fun is 1.5 - 2.5 , then 2.5 - 3.5 and up is clean and full. after 4.5 watch for the pipe after put in...

it would be great to see it added..
