Any good places in branson to kayak

Post by The huck » Fri Dec 02, 2011 2:23 pm

I live near Branson and recently bought a used whitewater kayak, I want a good place to practice on it.

You have many good creeks near Branson to start learning on..you just have to wait until it rains. There's Bull, Roark, Fall creek, Bear creek, Swan creek, Woods fork, Cane creek... Roark runs right through Branson! There are quite a few of us that hit these creeks when they run...some others my chime in too. 761-9091 To paddle :beer2:

You can always make a run down the James river or Finley creek if you just want to get your boat in the water...in the Nixa/Ozark/Springfield areas.

36.634132,-92.92595 put in

Other
36.967597,-92.990735 roadside 10 footer on public land needs lots of water

Plus lots more options when time allows. All of our stuff needs rain just like everywhere else, but the season is just about ready to begin.

A big lower swan creek is some mighty big water, 30,000 cfs is not unusual and a good run. cane, turkey, bear have much less volume.

Any of you Bransonians have those coords in Google Earth where you can export them as a KML file for us? If not, I can maybe figure out how to import the CSV format you posted and convert it to KML, but that would take years and cost millions of lives...

These creeks are a little out of your league fish :poke2: :ROFL: Do a search for DanMo as an author and you can ask him...I have no idea what a CSV or KML are :wht: , but Dan might know...that's where the info came from...that is, if he doesn't find this post first...I DO know how to type in coordinates and find em that way, which is a great feat in my books. Peace

It des not appear that any of the above creeks are listed on the American Whitewater site.

If you are a member of AW, you can ask to be a streamkeeper which allows you access to add/modify info in the river database.

If no one wants to do that, I can do if someone provides some info regarding class, etc.

You should be able to click this link and get a KML file for Bull Creek:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/34699750/132288 ... 128.84.kml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And this one for the 10-footer:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/34699750/132288 ... 128.84.kml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

To make the KML files, I used this site:
http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/map_input?form=googleearth" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I just pasted the coordinates you posted, Dan, and then doctored them a little so they were a valid comma-separated-values (CSV) format, as follows:

Code: Select all

latitude,longitude,name
36.906163,-93.137864,"park here"
36.908796,-93.137886,"Private, no access"
36.875065,-93.155916,""
36.78603,-93.174584,"Round mountain low water bridge, parking"
36.750483,-93.172867,"Colliseum AKA shady rapids, private need permission to drive down, popular play spot"
36.731878,-93.192866,"Public access best rapids upstream, usually best trout fishing downstream."
36.713338,-93.203766,"Private park public ok to access"
Then I pasted the above data into the "Or paste your data here" box. I also set the "Google Earth doc name" on that page to "Bull Creek", and changed "Default icon color" to yellow and "Default icon type" to "Pushpin" under the Waypoints section. Then just press the "Create KML File" button. (I also changed it from KMZ to KML, but that's completely optional and probably best left as KMZ for most purposes.)

Here's the data for the 10-footer too:

Code: Select all

latitude,longitude,name
36.967597,-92.990735,"roadside 10 footer on public land needs lots of water"
That web site can also turn GPS files into KML and convert all kinds of GPS data files from one format to another. Powerful stuff, for free!

I'll leave it to someone else to do the other creeks that Dan posted waypoints for and post them here so we'll all have 'em. I could do them too in about 10 minutes, but it's always better to teach a man to...

BTW, you have to have Google Earth installed to download the KML files into it automagically. Or you can do it in My Google Maps, but that takes a little bit of figuring out. Cheers.

Whata you know...they're the same I have saved on my Google earth program...thanx for the info..I'll check it out when I'm "in the right mind" :D

A lot of the creeks in this area are II-II+ with some occasional III's...depending on the levels as with any other runs...but a great place to learn a lot. It would be great to get some of these on American Whitewater so people can find out what they are dealing with. As I said, a little difference in cfs makes a lot of difference on these creeks, as do many runs...I started out on these creeks and worked my way up to some Arkansas runs and then to the Gauley!! Thanx everyone for the info!
