Maumee to Rush Trip Report

Post by Deuce » Sat Nov 19, 2011 4:57 pm

Dad and I launched at North Maumee Thursday afternoon. The weather was nice and the water level was perfect, just under six feet at the highway fourteen gauge. A ranger pulled up when we were a hundred yards or so down river, but we didn't encounter another human for the duration of the float. The birds (Eagles, Osprey, Kingfishers, Herons, et al) were in fine form and were feeling very photogenic. I found a few smallies including this one.

I used the DO I won at Rendezvous to make dessert Thursday night. Aaron of Buffalo River Float Service shuttled the truck for thirty bucks. I never regret using him. We took out at Rush, and while we were loading a ranger pulled up to chat. He immediately recognized us as the party he missed at Maumee. I think De Santos was his name, and he was exceptionally nice. My dad was a little intimidated by the fact that he wouldn't be able to bail if he got sick or cold or nervous, but he hung in there and told me when we got home he was glad he could say he went. All in all a good float. Hopefully the water (and the dispenser of yard passes) will cooperate and I can do another one soon.

Luke, it sounds like such a peaceful, fun trip. Things just didn't work out for me to go. Aaron, Leon, and Rocky do a terrific job @ BRFS. I always use them and have never had a problem of any kind.

I'm glad your dad enjoyed the trip. (How old is he?)
I hope to see you on the river one of these days.

Those are some pretty impressive smallies. Glad you and you Dad had a good trip.

Thanks everyone. Jan, sorry you couldn't make it, but I know how life can get in the way of a good time. My old man is 67, which isn't that old, but his health isn't the best. He was a trooper, but he definitely won't be doing this again. He's just not really up to it. :(

Thank you for sharing. The Buffalo is a wonderful place. And paddling on the Buffalo is something I hope to do until the day I die.

It really is a magical place. I plan to get a nice tripper this winter so my wanderings aren't limited to raft friendly flow.
