Swiftwate Rescue Workshop - 2 Spots left
Swiftwate Rescue Workshop - 2 Spots left
OK I have enough folks now to complete a workshop.
I have two dates in mind and need your input on choosing one.
Please contact me and let me know what would work best for your schedule.
I am looking at the first two weekends in November.
These would be the 4th through the 6th,
or the 11th through the 13th.
The workshop will start on Friday evening and conclude about 5 pm on Sunday.
As soon as the dates are set I will begin sending you updates on things to look at
and/or study for the workshop.
I do have room for a few more students, so if you know anyone who would like to
join us have them contact me to get signed up. I highly recommend for paddlers
who paddle together to train together. Thanks for your interest in this workshop it is going to be fun and informative.

Re: Swiftwate Rescue Workshop - two day
I am just getting settled back after busy weekend, sorry for the delay in returning your emails. Thanks every one for the interest in a SWR workshop.
It looks like the 11 - 14 is going to be the best weekend for most. So that is the date.
Contact me with a conformation if you can attend.
I have basic information on the workshops at my website here http://www.paddledogproductions.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You may contact me through PM here or at Paddledog.productions "at" gmail.com
The cost will be $125.00 for the whole weekend, more details and materials will sent out over the next couple weeks for you to study and refer to.
Again thanks for the interest, and to those who couldn't make it Keep an eye on the board and I will give another soon.

Hi Paddledog, some NTRR folks would like to know where this workshop is being conducted, and if one needs a drysuit? Thanks!

This workshop will be held here in NWA.
The workshop is about half dry land instruction and half river exercises.
The river work is planned for Fisher's Ford on the Illinois River, west of Fayetteville.
The land (dry) portion will be in a field in front of my house.
I live about 20 min. from the ford and have a shuttle vehicle that we can take to the river.
Students can stay in my home, camp the field or stay anywhere else they like
as long as they make it to class by 8 every morning.
As for dress, everyone should be equipped with what they would wear to paddle in that environment.
I my self don't wear a dry suit and will be in the water more than any student.
All the exercises during a workshop are "challenge by choice", participation is not mandatory for completion of the course.
We will have a fire on the riverside and will keep everyone as warm as possible.
More info is available on both my website http://www.paddledog.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and the ACC website.
Feel free to contact me if I can answer any other questions.
Thanks for the interest.

Re: Swiftwate Rescue Workshop - two day
Lorraine and all,
I'll chime in here also,
I will probably be wearing neoprene for this class as well. Drysuits are great, but neoprene gives impact protection as well as warmth when we are doing activities in the river.
I suspect the temperature will be a bit on the chilly side, but Steve and I have taught this same course in much colder conditions and everyone was still with us and smiling at the end of day two. We will be monitoring everyones condition throughout the day and taking "warmup" breaks as needed.
If anyone needs additional cold weather gear, let us know beforehand and we will do our best to accommodate. I actually like doing these types of trainings in cool conditions since that is what we often paddle in anyway. It is a great way to be sure you have the right gear and equipment and that it all works as you expect it to.
Looking forward to a great class!

Always a good idea to be prepared for conditions colder than expected. I'm sure ya'll have a great time. Steve, Tom, and the crew are fantastic. Best wishes for good weather.

Re: Swiftwate Rescue Workshop - two day
If lack of a wetsuit is preventing anyone from participating in this workshop, do not let that stop you. I have some wetsuit gear I would be willing to loan out to someone for the workshop and I am sure there are others out there who would do the same for other sizes.
In particular, I have a nearly new Tilos Titanium one piece 7mm wetsuit in 2XL, with an XL hood, XL gloves, and boots size 13 that I am willing to let someone use to be able to participate in this workshop. Also have an L-XL 3-4mm Shortie, a large 7mm farmer john, a med-large 7mm farmer john with a long sleeve top to go over it for double thickness in the torso for core heat retention. Also have 3-4 pairs of wetsuit booties of various sizes from 8 to 10 and a pair or two of wet suit socks for those who want to wear some type of shoes or boots over them. All this gear is in good clean, dry, usable condition, (not for sale), but you have to come to my house to borrow it. I live outside of Rogers on Beaver Lake in an area called Monte Ne. You can call me on my cell 721-9101 to set up a meet time and get further directions. And Yes, I am aware that gear can get torn up in these workshops, just like anytime you crawl around on the rocks and in the water for a few hours. Been there and done that and I am still offering to lend the gear. Just want it back in the same dry and clean condition with in a week or two.
The neoprene gives padding that a dry suit will not, unless you wore enough layers of fleece underneath it to provide the bulk, and then it would be too hot, and you still might not want to do some of the activities to the fullest for fear of damaging your dry suit. Drysuits are expensive and take a long time to be repaired if you send it off for someone else to do it. With neoprene, you just do not worry about mud, slime, or sticks, and if you do get a slice in it, it closes up fairly easily with a dab of neoprene cement after it is clean and dry. Neoprene means you have your padded armor on and you will want to get in the water just to get that layer of water in there to be heated up. Yes, you will sweat in it. I wash mine out with a brush after every use while taking a hot shower. Getting too hot from exertion? Swim around a bit and you have your heat exchange, NOT what you would do with a drysuit.

Thanks to all our participants for their determination and great attitudes in spite of the cool water and high winds over the weekend! We had a great class. It is always encouraging to see folks willing to spend a weekend learning to help their fellow paddlers.
Well Done!

BIG thanks to paddledog for a great SWR clinic and to Tom, Stefan (sp?), and Roger for lending their time and expertise to help us improve our knowledge base and skill in SWR situations. These folks are top notch and anyone who hasn't gone through one of these classes should take the time to do it.
