concrete put in richland
Re: concrete put in richland
And what's with the pave the way for me? I'm not denying the mans influence in our sport in the state. For me personally he has had absolutely no influence so please enough with that...
Re: concrete put in richland
Consider the time of year - it's hot and dry and no water to paddle - that's usually when the disagreements begin. When it rains again and the creeks rise, everyone will love each other again and go paddlingBenji wrote:My problem is that I have been reluctant to join because of all the pissing matches I've read between you guys over the years.

I agree Renee, when boaters dont get their daily watering things can get a little nutts on the board. I just hope a family isnt thinking about joining and comes to the board to check the club out. Not cool when we start
each other on a public board that brings paying memebrs in that funds all the cool events we have.

Sincerely,
Adam Willard

There is no way I can agree with this statement. "like it or not, natural went out the window decades and centuries ago for almost all rivers and it's a matter of striking the right balance."
Dude your full of it. I can gaurantee there are more natural, wild, untouched, and scenic rivers and creeks in this world, than there are the Disneyland types. Keep looking chief. Not everything has been touched by the hand of man. Ignoramus...

As Adam suggested, for the sake of the club, let's keep the conversation productive with out all the finger pointing.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: concrete put in richland
I have not been on the board for a while due to technological ineptitude and not being an avid paddler for a while. But my life still revolves around the river. Having first paddled Richland Creek in 1978 and experiencing a true natural atmosphere, nothing was better. My butthole spasmed for at least a day after. We scouted every rapid and it took us seven hours to complete the run. Compare taht to Cowper's annivesery runsssssss. (I might have missed one!) I've spent 25 + years boat aping at Turner Bend with Brad and Lloyd and James and a bunch of good folks. We went on many rescues and were happy to bring the folks home. I don't remember many of those. I do remember the recoveries. They are etched in my mind and I still dream about them. Having to tell kin that they didn't make it is horrible. I don't Kno Dr. Dale very well having met him and Pam at Roxie and wayne functions but I know who he hangs with. If his observation is that it could prevent one recovery then it is a good thing. We must remember it is not always about ourselves.

Mrs Barton, my name is Ben Maguire. I'm from Fayetteville and certainly didn't mean to offend you or your husband. Guess I just felt like the new guy was being picked on for no reason. Like I said in my earlier posts, I've sat on the board sidelines since high school and never had any need to comment. I hope that you can understand the conviction I have on the issue, it's one of the most beautiful places in Arkansas and if I ever have children ( truly scary) I want it to be as untouched a place as I had as a young man. Again If I've offended you, I apologize.

Re: concrete put in richland
This is a quick read that may provide a picture of what the waterways we paddle looked like long before we were around.
http://www.americanwhitewater.org/conte ... ody_debris" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This just points to one way man alters streams and there are lots of other reads on the subject, some more empirical than others. What we see now may seem untouched or natural and certainly many are still scenic/wild and hope they stay that way, but in the lower 48 at least it is hard to find anything but the smallest of watersheds not directly influenced by man at least in some small way and if we broaden the perspective and consider indirect influences such as agriculture, forestry operations, roads, pollution, fracking, and the numerous other ways our byprodcuts can interact with streams even the smallest watersheds are not what they used to be.
The waterway in question is one of the most remote in a relatively unpopulated state and has several bridges that no one seems to complain about, but ironically those bridges that provide kayakers access have already put 100s of tons of cement in the stream. As this post demonstrates, how much influence should we have on the stream is a matter of debate, but there is not much debating that it has already been altered by the hands of man.
OT - got 1.5 inches of rain at my house today.

Re: concrete put in richland
I wasn't going to weigh in on this topic until now. This is why I love the ACC. We can disagree and even get a bit fired up...but at the end of the day we're all paddlers who enjoy protecting and paddling our natural and sometimes not so natural rivers and creeks of Arkansas.
