colorado camping

Post by whudson » Wed Jun 29, 2011 11:05 am

Does anyone know of a good national forest campground in the area of Creede or South Fork CO? This would be in the upper Rio Grande area. The ideal place would have a mountain creek tumbling past and lots of trees. Other amenities would be secondary for us. We also need to be able to drive there in a car. Thanks. Walter

Thirty Mile Campground is ~ 30 miles from Creede on Rio Grande ~ 1 mile below Rio Grande Reservoir. Great starting point for hiking into Wemuniche Wilderness.

Silver Thread Campground is ~ 23 miles from Creede on Hwy 149 between Creede and Lake City. Short hike to South Clear Creek Falls.

Pallisade Campground is on Hwy 149 between South Fork and Creede. It is on Rio Grande and gets very busy.

There are many FS roads you can take to find non-campground camping between Creede and Lake City. One of them is Pool Table Road #600(Springs Gulch) from Creede go 7.3 miles southeast on Highway 149. This beautiful road will take you to the trailhead to Wheeler Geological Area. Map here:

Walter, been many years but there is a camp ground that meets your requirements. 30 mile sounds like the name of the camp ground my wife and I used. Just below the big lake which is good for fishing. We took our canoe and fished and mostly just enjoyed being there.

Is the road to 30 mile suitable for a car (Toyota Matrix)?
