Ran upper west fork at 18'+ today!

Post by BMuu » Mon May 23, 2011 9:50 pm

I wish this thing ran at this level more often!

At this level we put in at the winslow ball park, the private drive bridge there was nearly under water so we put in on the other side of it. 3 guys tried to chainsaw trees off the bridge while we put on.

About 15 yards from the put-in is the biggest drop I would rate it at a class 3+ at this level. You hit 2 river wide holes before hitting a 4' verticle drop. The drop must be ran far left unless you carry a lot of speed and try to boof over the large hydrolic at the bottom.

After that there were several LARGE class 3 waves/holes down to where we took out at the rest stop. We would have ran to the west fork park but we were limited on time and it was more like west fork lake anyways.

I have ran the lower section several times since it's so close and easy access but this was my first time to run the upper. It was a totally different river.

Here is a pic of the boatball park just before we put on.

It is an under-utilized stream in our back yard. Glad someone got to float it today.

Hopefully you wern't flooded out yesterday :D

Here is a pic of where we put in. You can see the first hole, it's immediately followed by another one and then the veritcle 4' drop. It was a fun rapid! I was squirted on the 2nd hole and barely caught the line for the drop.

In the pic you can't see the main drop, but trust me it's there. I should have got a pic from the other side.

Saw this so we got in yesterday at the rest stop and ran to the park in West Fork. Several good holes with wave trains and nice surfing, but no drops. There is one turn where the river narrows and hits a big rock on the left and it makes a sweet little "verve pipe" turn into it with a small drop and plop right after hitting the turn. Overall though it was a fun run with good standing waves, and one large, pushy combination of several wave trains coming into eachother towards the end. Where exactly did you guy put in to run down to the rest stop though? Looks like I need to do that next ;)

Well aren't you helpful. Really just not familiar with the Winslow area or its "ballpark" at all so I was just trying to get a little more detail..

Haha it's all good man, I've just heard all sorts of different names and other crap for put ins so I didn't even know if it was literally a ball park or what lol. Thanks though. I like running this since from that rest stop it's only about 20 minutes from Fayetteville, I can get out of class and run it and still have daylight to burn up.

Just be careful not to get skunked.

The gauge for the West Fork is downstream a long ways from Winslow.

Have been wanting to reply but we finally got power back on Winslow. What a pleasant surprise to come home from a float on Lee and dinner at Catfish Hole to have power back. Now if we can just get the water back on.

Here's that same drop earlier in the year with much lower flow. Kinda eye level with the fall.
