Beaware Richland internet guage is reading high

Post by panicman » Thu May 05, 2011 10:18 am

We ran richland yesterday and when we dropped shuttle bridge guage was 3.5 and when we took off it was 3.4. Put in showed about 15 to 16 when we put on and close to 18 when we got back up top.

I believe that is accurate. We ran a couple weeks ago and gauge read 3.4 and the airspace was about 18".

I think what he's saying is: the reported USGS level is reading high. Right now the website is showing 3.58 and yesterday it would have been higher of course, I think around 4 ft. But their visual read of the gauge and the bridge indicated a lower level.

That is correct. Internet guage is reading higher than what it really is by about 2 to 3 tenths and maybe more. Right now internet is reading 3.58 and it is probably more like 3ish feet or 20 inches at put in.

InterestIng. We ran Richland 2 weeks ago and Internet gauge was 2.8. If gauge was reading high at that time then Richland is definitely runnable a little below 3 feet

Bumping this thread bc I noticed some people were planning to go to richland and were not aware of the gauge change.

I wonder if this is just a temporary thing or permanent.

All of the standard and automatic tech reference points used for a level reading can be altered by flaws in equipment, extreme weather, and alterations in the river system such as bank erosion and gravel addition, deposition and redeposition, and/0r removal - whether from natural or anthropogenic causes.

It could be the the gage's flow transducer was whacked in flood, has wandered from it's calibration, or is just reflecting changes in stream fluvial geomorphology at the measurement site.

At the put in the level of air space could be affected by the last tree that was on the bridge and could have altered the gravel movement degradation/ aggregation which could impact the interpretation of air space.

At the take out bridge the same type thing could be happening or not.

Either way it's interesting for conversation and good to know about. Thanks for posting up ab out the contradicting level readings  .

I reported this using the link on their website; when they reply I'll keep everyone updated.

I heard it already "skunked" the ARG, who showed up on the Piney yesterday after finding Richland too low for a raft float of the lower...

We were not "skunked." We just found a new way to set the Piney shuttle.

I'm saving that; just gotta figure out how to work it into a paddling conversation. :)
